My name is Gustavus. I am known as the Humble by many. I can be described as taller than average, with a solid build, but as nondescript as an Easterner can be, however the racial traits are still there to be noticed by those that look.
I intend to learn of this world, and conduct myself justly to the best of my ability, but will not suffer fools that require my submission. In order to become the next Ruler of Kings, I will act thusly, and if I fail, I will go to the afterlife with both myself and the Powers That Be knowing I was a good man.
Advisor Description
The Captain stood by a stone post in the town square, slowly sipping from a water skin. His eyes followed the youth as he followed his mother from market stall to stall, pushing a hand cart laden with meagre supplies. The cart was heavy and exertion was clearly taking its toll on the boy, but under no circumstances would the boy allow his mother to carry the load. The Captain assumes this was done out of necessity; the only way the lad could show his mother the respect she deserved but would not receive from many of the townsfolk. A hard worker, the work clearly aiding his burgeoning muscular development.
Gustavus has witnessed the man before. What boy wouldn't notice the open presence of arms and armour, let alone of the slightly better equipment afforded of rank?
The pair drew nearer, and as the woman was negotiating for vegetables, Gustavus drew closer out of interest of the well kept, but noticeably well used, martial equipment. Not wanting to appear overtly interested, and thereby offending the soldier, sideways glances were the order of the day. This didn't work.
"What's caught your eye, boy?" asked the Captain.
"Nothing, Sir, my apologies, Sir… "
"Is it the sword? There's nothing wrong with healthy curiosity, come closer and see"
A moments hesitation and the Captain witnessed thoughts playing across the boy's face.
"There's nothing wrong with healthy caution either. Foolish rushing into scenarios without thought can often get you harmed. Always think before you act. This is a hand-and-a-half sword. A sword is a fine weapon, and a badge of office, but never be so foolish as to think that less refined weapons aren't as useful, or as deadly. As for armour… "
These meetings would continue sporadically across the years, with Gustavus never quite being able to abolish the thought he was being engaged on purpose, and being judged. The thought of being considered for selection for a Cadetship fearfully entertained, despite one of common birth never having a chance and always destined for the life of a peasant levee in times of need, or less likely as an enlisted soldier. At least a soldier would receive a modicum of useful training, Gustavus would lament.
After many years, the question was asked by Gustavus why he was the only youth being talked with, and whether that meant Captain Ivan was interested in recruiting him.
"Keep to your studies, keep strong, respect your mother, and it wouldn't hurt you to visit church. The drudgery of a soldier's life is not for you. Then why? Believe me, boy, if you knew who your father was you would have preferred not to have known why."
I have paid the Town Builders fer meh new wooden abode and today I have moved in to occupy the said premises.
A Bat Swarm looks strange when motionless on the ground.
Let it be known that I, Gustavus, have attained Level 1 and as such have grown in both ability and endurance.
A Caveman was one of the enemies that I laid low this day.
Ever fought a Dog Rat? I did… and beat it to death.
Now that I have attained Level 2 among my people, ye shall see a more powerful Gustavus than otherwise might have been known.
