Koren the Raider

I, am Koren and I was given this name after General Koren my Grandfather on my mother's side. My mother loved him dearly though my father never did win his approval. He disowned my parents and I think my naming may have been a ploy to win his approval. I am known as the Raider because as a boy I was always raiding the shelves and cupboards at home for something interesting. I never took anything that didn't belong to me, I just a little facetious. I did help my mother around the house a lot. If I ever had any spare time, I would be off exploring anything that took my fancy.

Both of my parents were human. My father was a foot soldier. He was very good at his job though because he wasn't an officer like my grandfather, he never approved of him. This meant that my father was always away on military duty in an effort to impress Grandfather. When he was home my mother got all his attentions. No matter what I did I rarely got his attention and at times I felt I was invisible.

I stand five foot seven inches tall with a tawny lean and only slightly muscle body. I have Brown hair down to the nape of my neck and a three-day growth. I have deep engaging Hazel Eyes like my mothers. My lightly tanned skin, uneven ears and crooked smile generally makes me unique.

I see myself as one who follows my father's footsteps as a soldier though to be honest, I am not as muscular as he was and am a little more prone to ranging. I want to live up to my father's expectation by first starting a trade in soldiering or maybe even ranging to become a scout. I generally view alliances as an advantage though sometimes I have poor people skills.

I intend to do build up military knowledge from the ground up. I will work my up through the ranks and hopefully even surpass my grandfathers' position. I will then gain enough power and influence on my way through the ranks and eventually become the next Ruler of Kings. Thus, I now start this path towards my destiny.

Raider Koren

Advisor Description

Koren needed a place to stay. He was not desperate though he was pragmatic and knew that this was the next logic step in his journey. So, he headed for the local Inn. Koren made was making his way down the avenue, he was not in a rush though he was not prone to wonder. Out of the corner of his eye he spied a rather none descript figure of average height and build. He likely would not have noticed if it hadn't been for the glint of metal reflecting the sun which caught Koran's eye. After a few corners Koren noticed that the figure was following him. His heart jumped. Why was he being followed? What had he done? He had taken on some risky jobs as a translator though nothing to warrant this level of trouble. Not knowing what to do and not being too familiar with this part of town Koren decided on a hastily formulated plan. After rounding two corners in quick succession he ran. He ran past another two corners in random directions ducked into a small niche in a wall and hid. It felt like an eternity to Koren Hiding in the niche with his heart beat out of his chest. After a minute or so Koren felt it would be safe move. He cautiously moved away from the niche. On quick examination of the thoroughfare he began to head back in the direction of the Inn. Koren rounded the first corner not 30 feet from his hiding place when he walked head long into the figure he had been running from and fell on his back helplessly looking up at his pursuer. The pursuer chuckled out loud. "You're quicker than you look. I nearly lost you." Koren didn't know how to react. This man must be toying with him. The pursuer continued "You don't know me and clearly you don't trust me. Which is good because this means you are not a fool.... I need to talk to you." He offered a hand to Koren and reflexively he took it. As the man help Koren up he asked him "Where are you headed?" "T To the .... Inn." Koren stammered in reply. He didn't want to tell the man, but he just couldn't think of a good lie either. "Good. We'll Talk on the way."
They walked in silence initially, Koren took the time get the measure of the man. Under the well-worn waist high brown cloak, He wore riding leathers and boots. The glint of metal he seen before came from a well-polished and maintained breast plate which remained mostly covered. A pair of worn leather gloves hung from just below the cloak at the rear in a manner the showed he had placed them there habitually. The sandy blonde-haired man had the weather-beaten look of a soldier. Though he was too well kemp and clean shaven to be a regular soldier. He must have been an officer. "Koren, I am Phillip. Your grandfather asked me to keep an eye on you." With a sudden rush of emotions Koren blurted out. "He is alive?"
"No, He died some years ago." Phillip replied abruptly. Phillip could see the tempest of emotions in the Karen's eyes, after all he was just a boy and a civilian. Philip adjust his manner of speech to account for these facts.
"Your Grandfather didn't speak about you or your family much. He was a direct man. Though the few brief times he spoke about you and your family I could see that he was deeply torn. He explained to me that he didn't keep touch with your mother because of your fathers' military position, you know family pride and such." He vaguely explained.
" Then why are you here?" Koren blurted. He was such a mixture of emotions. His grandfather had abandoned Karen's family because of pride? What kind of man was he?
Phillip continued "He explained to me that even though you are the son of Donald you are still the grandson of Koren, Your grandfather, and as such you deserve the right and opportunity to make the best of yourself and not be punished for the misgivings of your mother and father. So, He asked me to advise you."
Koren was dumb founded. He didn't know what to say. He loved his mother and always wanted the approval of his father. He couldn't figure out if this was or wasn't some sort of a betrayal of their memory. His father always did want his grandfather's approval, and this in a manner of speaking was exactly that. But this was all too much.
Koren looked at Phillip "This is just so much to think about."
" Well let's start by getting a gauge on your situation. What do you want to do with yourself?"
"I wanted to be a military man like my father or my mothers' father. I want to prove my worth." Koren stated proudly puffing out his chest.
Phillip eyed him quizzically "An officer or a soldier?"
Koren considered his audience and promptly replied "an officer."
Phillip eyed him for a minute. Musing in silence. I am not sure we will be able to get you in as an officer given your current circumstance, so you would have to become a soldier first and work your way up. Even then you have a long way to go before you can be a soldier. Even so every route march begins with the first place, and perhaps someday you may even be the Ruler of Kings" Phillip said in a half jest. "Stick with me and I will do what I can. Just remember I can only advise you. You are the one who has to make the decisions and take the action."
After this Phillip and Koren continued to walk to the Inn slowly getting to know each other.

Reflections On Your Mother

Korens mother was a warm woman with long brown hair a loving smile which only a mother could have. She was always dotting on Koren when his father was not around. As his father was always away on some military expedition this was often. Although Karen got into a little mischief from time to time, it was never any real trouble. Not like some of the other boys on the edge of town. She Always kept a clean house as meagre as it was, and there was always food in his stomach as well. Karen love his mother and would always help her around the house when he could. She was the centre of his life and the rock he built himself on. On thinking back to his mother Karen mused that She had not only been the centre of his life but he also the centre of his. She was a very generous woman. Although she never had any great wealth, no thanks to her father, she was always willing to help others in need. This was mostly in the form of physical labour, mending clothes or cooking for friends and acquaintances. She was always happy to help out anyone even strangers if the situation arose. In his reflections Karen wondered if she had ever put a foot wrong. No, not in Karens eyes anyway.

House of Sorrows

This is an interesting question? The house, I believe, the beautiful doors, the beautiful trimmings the childish drawings, this is the entrance to our world. The books on the shelves are our unseen world, the bindings are the bindings of our world. This is the foundation of our world. Though as simple as it may be, I believe that it is elegant and enchanting. Now to speak of your children they would be us the occupants of this world. Some of us are inquisitive caught up in the intrigue of what is going on around us. Some have a short attention spans, flitting from one thing to another with reckless abandon. Some of us are just spectators in this world choosing only to partake when necessary. Some of us are angry with no reason for it, looking for violence for violence sake. And you.... You are the caretaker of this world, of us, and as do this with great diligence and care. As an adult looking after a child, you are concerned. Who will maintain the upkeep of this house? I see no youths here. I see no young, no adolescents here. I see no young adults. Who then will the responsibility fall to? Who will have the ability to maintain the upkeep? Surely not the children. Maybe that is what you seek. What you are asking without saying. Are you then the creator? Are you a god? Are you calling one of us children to divinity? If this is the case, if this is so, then I am surely not the person you seek. I can tell you plainly that I am not worthy. Perhaps If the children are raised properly. If you give them the right opportunities to be responsible the perhaps one day then, one day some of your children would be able to manage the upkeep of your house. But not I, not I. I would ask though, is there anything which I could do for you? Praise? Worship? Anything to gain your favour? Please let me know and I will do what I can to complete it. Your story though would imply that there is a world beyond our own. Another world beyond my comprehension. Is this the spirit world? Is this the Fae world? Surely not. This I could not fathom. No. No. This then is just my imagination getting away from me. Though I must say that your wonderful words do make me dream, oh do they make me dream so. I think that I will be coming back to hear you speak. Yes, I will. I will also come back for the company of your children. I have enjoyed them and all their misgivings. No doubt I have misgivings of my own as I am no angle. So, This I guess is what I believe your words are. I hope I have not offended you. So please answer me. Is this so? Is this the case? Or is my imagination just getting away from me?
