Trees might be 'aware' of their size, Birch trees adjust their stem thickness to support their weight. Source 2a.

Aware Trees Are

I believe that trees are not aware like other animals are aware, as they have no brain or such things. However, they do have some sort of self-regulation that enables them to know how to grow to a certain extent.
