GIRL RAPED AS PARENTS THOUGHT HER SAFE
The parents of a 12-year-old girl thought she was safely tucked up in bed. Instead she was being raped as she walked through the grounds of a Hastings primary school after a dance competition, police say.

This is so unfortunate! What is a 12 years old girl doing at 11:00pm at night walking alone? *shaking head* The saddest thing is that even if her parents may have been responsible parents, the fact they allowed such a young kid to spend the night by a relative's house is not longer safe these days. I personally do not want anything to do with sleep overs or children coming to my place to spend the night. The world is no longer safer for these type of things neither there are enough responsible adults.

I agree with LDS, with the addition I would like to state that stories like these are uncommon. I feel that we should all check the backgrounds of your child's friends parents, also go to their house, when your child is there, unannounced, to see how they are treating your kid.

Were the relatives she was staying with aware she had gone to the dance competition or did she sneak out? If she snuck out then this could have happened even if her parents had not allowed the sleepover. Children can be very resourceful and even the most responsible parent can have a child sneak out at night.
If the adults were aware she had gone to the dance competition they should have picked her up instead of allowing her to walk home alone at night. Unfortunately the link to this story is expired so I cannot check for myself. Does anyone remember the facts surrounding this incident?
