What is truth?
In the end all of all that can be understood, what is truth?
There are many types of truths. The Truth, is with capital T, the rest are just things that people consider to be true but not necessarily are.
In the first century AD, Pontius Pilate (John 18:38) asked "What is truth?" but no answer was forthcoming. The problem has been studied more since the turn of the twentieth century than at any other previous time.
So it is not a very easy question to answer. There are many theories.
To me, absolute 'Truth' is the way the universe actually IS.
Relative 'truth' is the way we THINK the universe is based on our life experiences (AKA belief).
The challenge is not really with defining Truth but in recocnizing within ourselves that almost all of what we accept as 'truth' is nothing more than belief. Edited: MartinR on 20th Jun, 2006 - 6:58pm
I don't believe in absolute truth. I believe there are thinks that are true because we have deemed them true through the process of social evolution. But absolute truth cannot exist on the sheer basis that so many people believe their truth to be the absolute truth. There is no way to validate absolute truth except against your own perceptions and beliefs about truth. With out that, no absolute truth exists outside of your own mind. There for truth is a basic principle defined by the social climate of the period.
Many people today don't want honest answers insofar as honest means unpleasant or disturbing, They want a soft answer that turneth away anxiety." Louis Kronenberger - (1904-1980)
I believe in the movie "A few good men" Jack said "You can not handle the truth". This statement while a simple movie statement means a lot on the real world. Many people do not want to know the truth because it will burst their little bubble they live in. They do not want to know how bad things are getting. They simply ignore it all and go about as if there is nothing wrong anywhere. I believe this world would be a much better place if many of these people came out of their bubble and actually see the world for what it is. Maybe then they will band together to get things changed for the better.
"One of the world's greatest problems is the impossibilty of any person searching for the truth on any subject when they believe they already have it." -- Dave Wilbur
