Nix the Mercenary

I am called Nix. My father and mother wanted great things for me. At my young age of 16 I can only hope I do not let them down. I chose to be known as Mercenary because I do not want to be tied down to just one path. I want to see the world and the riches it holds. I want to have it all.

As a half-elf I know I'm different, not accepted by all. But that doesn't matter. I know who I am. I know what I want. I know it won't be easy.

My mother told me my dark green eyes, pale skin, and black hair come from my father and his people. She always laughed as she "apologized" for giving me my slight build and dark smile. Her laughter is one of the things I miss most about her. It helped as dried my tears at the cruelty of the full blooded humans.

I start my own path today. I know allies and friends are the keys to my desires. Perhaps the shadows do as well.

Mercenary Nix

A Sentimental Value

A plain, simple, black tarnished silver ring. It was my father's, a match to the one on her finger. Mother kept it on a matching silver chain she wore around her wrist. Tears, smiles, pained gazes, and even her laughter sprang forth with just a glance at it. It's the only keepsake I have of them both.

A paltry connection to what use to be home.

A strong tie to those I know who truly loved me.

Advisor Description

Captain Greythorn is both an imposing and charismatic man. But just as kindhearted and open minded.

I was making a delivery of venison to the barracks. Some of the men, emboldened by their nightly ration of mead, had taken their "subtitle" abuse to the next level. They had me cornered, at first throwing insults, then their fists. Light blows grew harsher the more they drank. I closed my eyes, covering my head as best I could.

A bearish roar was my first introduction to the Captain.

Bodies were flung against the wall I had curled up against. Meaty thud after meaty thud shook the roughly hewn wood. Such a short time had past from the last blows aimed at me to the last blows aimed at the guards.

I will say I first shied away from the outstretched hand that was offered to help me stand. But the smile on the Captain's lips quickly earned my trust. His first words to me earned my loyalty.

"We've got to teach you to fight, don't we lad."
"Yes Sir. Yes we do."
