If you wish to keep mosquitoes away and do not want spend a lot of money on chemicals that may or may not be effective then look at alternative methods. There are plants that you can plant around your house that repeal mosquitoes naturally. Walking about you home and making sure there are no standing areas of water for them to breed in is helpful. Remember a mosquito does not travel very far from where it was born. Water can be hidden in places most do not think of. Patio chairs or plastic children toys that can collect water inside them is a perfect place for them to lay their eggs. They need stagnant standing water. If you have a pond in your yard add a fountain to keep the water moving.
You can also invite a family of barn swallows to build a nest around your house. You can build bat houses too. Barn swallows and other swallows are a big eaters of insects like mosquitoes. Bats are very good at eating them too. Since bats hibernate over half the year they are not seen much and they are most active when it is warm enough for mosquitoes and other insects. Doing some of this can keep you and your yard free of those blood sucking pests all year round without the use of chemical sprays, sticks, candles or torches.
I have heard that putting cloves spikes in lime and lemon halves can keep away mosquitoes, and flies to help keep your home free of these pests. You can also build a bat house and hope that some bats move in as they will rid the area of mosquitoes very quickly.
There are a lot of different things to repel mosquitos naturally. Citronella candles also work. Not sure if these are readily available in other countries, but in Australia, it is not uncommon to walk through caravan parks with the sweet smell of citronella in the breeze. Some plants that help ward off mossies are as follows: Rosemary, catnip (Warn your cats if you choose to plant this), Lemongrass (And makes a great tea also), Citronella, Lavender (However this will increase your bee population which can be a positive and a negative), peppermint (Peppermint oil deters spiders.), marigolds also have had some mention for repelling mosquitos.
I'm still waiting on the Death Star system that debuted at TED talks several years back.
Basically, the thing listens for the unique frequency of a mosquito's wings, and fires a low intensity laser at the source. Skeeter drops and won't be biting anything.
There's this demonstration video they made, they stuffed enough mosquitoes into a glass tank that you could hardly see through it, the stuff of nightmares if they ever got out. Switched the laser system on, and it cleared the tank in less than a minute.
