Novak Djokovic, the 24-year-old Serb tennis sensation, on Sunday defeated defending champion Rafael Nadal of Spain 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 to claim his first Wimbledon title.

With Sunday's victory, Djokovic solidifies his new No. 1 ATP ranking and extends his 2011 record to 48-1.

This was the fifth time Djokovic and Nadal, 25, have met this year and the fifth time Djokovic has won. Ref. CNN

Serbia's Novak Djokovic has become just the sixth man to win three tennis Grand Slam singles titles in the same year, defeating world No. 2 Rafael Nadal in four sets at the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows.

Djokovic, who took the No. 1 ranking from Nadal earlier this year, won 6-2, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 in a raucous, fiery match that lasted more than four hours.

Djokovic, 24, has enjoyed one of the sport's finest individual seasons, compiling a 64-2 record and collecting 10 titles in 2011. His two other Grand Slam titles this year were the Australian Open, where he beat Andy Murray, and Wimbledon, where he defeated Nadal. Ref. CNN

In a marathon showdown between the top two tennis players in the world, Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5 to win the Australian Open on Sunday.

The match lasted five hours and 53 minutes. It was the first time the two have played a five-set match in 30 meetings.

For No. 1-ranked Djokovic of Serbia, this is his third Australian Open title and his fifth major title.
