I moved this here as it is not related directly to the Summit of the Americas. Yes we have a large flow of natural gas, oil and have one of the biggest Ammonia plants in the world and the current PM is industrializing part of the country even more much to the dissatisfaction of a lot of environmentalist.

It would seem to me that if your country has oil and natural gas as well as ammonia for export then there is no reason that many in your country are starving or suffering from being poor. I would think that your PM would want to make your country into a very nice place. I would hate to see what happens if all the thugs get a hold of these types of resources.

Well I would not say many are "starving". We have not reached the stage of Somalia or the Congo. However our people do have to really struggle to make ends meet, at least the majority. What really lacks here is BASIC infrastructure, services, safety and reasonable prices that MATCH the salary you get. Oil and Gas dollars do not net get to the public save in one recent way - the government pays for full education up to PhD level. With the Oil prices down I'm not sure how long they will keep that up. To understand it more you need to read the Thread: "How Good Is Trinidad & Tobago To Live?"

TampT Gas and Oil

The emptying oildrum

Oil production began in T&T in 1909 at 130 barrels of oil per day (bopd). This production peaked in 1979, 229,527bpod, and between January-May 2008 was in the region of 114,000bpod. By 1979 the total amount of oil taken from the ground was some 1.8 billon barrels and by 2002 this figure had grown to 3.06billion. According to King-Hubbert, the famous geologist, at its production-peak the well, or field, or country would have given up half of the available oil, implying that then we would have had some 0.6billion barrels left (estimated reserves  then were 0.7billion). However, this remaining oil will be more difficult and more expensive to produce. We have all heard the Minister of Energy tell us that the industry is now looking at mining our oil sands, an expensive and environmentally damaging exercise. We are at the tail end of this industry. Title: Depletion of our oil and oil resources

Comments: This is more or less a follow up to my previous comment on the subject of our oil and gas resources. Something seems a bit strange now that shell has also jumped on the bandwagon to help us find more more oil. Why have they become suddenly so interested all at once. They knew we have oilfields and knew the declining prospects of finding more oil and gas here. Why didn't they volunteered their services before? . What kind of bait in being used to make these big companies show such quick or renewed interest in the amount of unknown quantities of oil or gas here?. Surely they are not going to spend money in search for oil here when reports points to a depletion in our reserves?. It looks most likely that we won't know the true details of these agreements until it is perhaps too late. According to the US based oil and gas company in 2011 we had only 9 year of gas left here. They seem to be bang on target. Perhaps that is why the Prime Minister rushed off to Venezuela to make agreements with the Venezuelan government to supple us with gas. Other known reports have also indicated that we are using up our oil reserves at too fast a rate, and this will in the end lead early depletion.

Title: Angelin gas platform

Comments: Yes,it me again trying to knock some sense into the heads of our none logical thinking band of citizens. Why is Mr Gregory Aboud writing to BP about the moan from the OWTU workers concerning the none construction of the Angelin gas platform in Trinidad. The Prime minister must have agreed with BP to have the platform built elsewhere. Didn't he signed and agreement which must have included BPs decision?. If this is not so why isn't he complaining?. The intervention by Mr Aboud trying to allocate blame to BP is just the sort of thing that is wrong here, and sets a bad example to business investors and logical thinking citizens by trying allocate blame to others, when he must know who was really responsible for accepting the decision not to have the platform built here. Mr Aboud should be confronting the Prime Minister over this issue,after-all he was the mam who bolted to America to negotiate new agreements with oil companies BP being one of them.

Title: Gas resources,

Comments: Yes sir, you have read exactly what is published and if I were you I would take it with a pinch of salt. Some politicians and citizens here are failing to think logically. They believe that our natural resources of oil and gas is going to last forever and continued to be sold at a high price .
All they have to do is to see what is happening in Venezuela which is supposed to be one of the world's leading producer of oil. Not only that .They want also to think about why it was necessary for our Prime Minister to make a formal agreement with the leader of Venezuela to supply gas to this island, and then suddenly go gallivanting to the USA to seek help in the hope of finding more oil and gas here.

The politicians here keep talking about diversification but are doing nothing about it. Our current brigade of politicians in the corridors of power haven't got a clue of what to do now that the end of our boom is now in sight. .They have become too reliant on earning easy money from our profits from our natural resources.
In my opinion, sooner than later the foreign investors who became overnight millionaires are going to pack their bags and leave.
However, before they go, they are going to make sure that they milk the Treasury of every penny by offering new contacts to drill for oil and gas pretending that we still have hidden oil and gas resources.when they as experts know our sources are near depletion because of excessive production to fulfill the personal greed of both investors and local politicians..
On a whole the depletion of these two resources may be a very good thing for the citizens of this nation as every one will then have to earn a crust by honest hard work, .provided there in restoration of our agricultural industries such as sugar and cocoa.
