Comments: What the Ministry of Education needs to do is have more than the compliment of teachers in every school. There should be assistant teachers always on standby either to assist the teacher or take over a class if the teacher is not present. Not having this in place means a class can go unattended while the teacher is away on sick leave or whatever and that sucks.
If only they are able to do that but that is not the reality here. In fact we have a shortage of teachers but the bad part about it is that our Minister thinks there are too many. He is working with pen and paper and not reality. He divided the number of children to the number of teachers and came up with a magic figure that we have too many teachers in the system. Yes it truly sucks to be a teacher here but I am not giving up.
Well as far as I know it there is suppose to be 20 pupils to 1 teacher in the Infant Department and 25 pupils to 1 teacher for the rest of the school. This is for the Primary Level, I don't know the percentage for the Secondary. Some people swear the ratio is 25:1 for Infants and 30:1 for the rest. Of course you know he probably used that latter ratio for his calculations. Whatever ratio he used, he just simply divided the number of pupils by the number of teachers.

Comments: Teachers getting paid real good. They have regular hours and don't have to work on holidays and for 2 months in the year! I don't know why they always complaining when I getting half what they get and have to work holidays too!
Well Wassi I will tell what I tell all the parents who say the same as you. Firstly I don't make any apologies for having a job that gives me those 'perks' if you will. Speaking of 'perks', the two months you say that teachers get every year. Those two months are not ours, they are the children's holidays. In other words the Ministry can call us to work during that time. Did you also know that teachers have to ask the Ministry for permission to leave the country during that time? Bet you didn't know that one did you? How about having a class full of children with various problems, ages and academic level but the Ministry (and parents too) expects you the teacher to get all of them at the same level at the end of the academic year. When the children do badly, it's the teacher's fault but when they do well, it is because of the dedicated parents he has. Yes there are times when teachers get their praises but how often does it happen? I can talk all day but I think you get the picture.
