The problem with board games is that so many of them are so poorly designed, especially the classic ones. Monopoly is an egregious example. It's built around the idea of eliminating players until only one is left. Also, in any given turn, a player's options are scandalously limited, One moves according to the dictates of the dice, always clockwise, and once you arrive at a space, the things you can do there aren't very interesting.
Interaction between players is limited to demanding rent and paying rent, which is no more fun in the game than it is in real life.
It's almost as if somebody said, "Hey! Let's make a game, and make it as non-fun as possible!"
And his friend said, "Great idea! Let's make sure there is no room in the rules for creativity!"
Fortunately, there are other, more recent games on the market now, with better designs, and better rules. Many of them seem to come from Europe, and are categorically referred to as 'Eurogames'.
Maybe one of those could meet you game playing needs.
Actually, the US board game market is orders of magnitude larger than the Roleplaying Game Market, and a lot of that is targeted at adults. The games have come a long, long way from Monopoly.
That said, since it's a hate thread, I hate that so many board games use super small print. My wife is legally blind and I'm getting older, so the tiny text is a real hinderance.
You know I haven't thought about that but the small text is irritating. Maybe they think that if we don't really know all the rules of the game we won't realize how ridiculous playing it will be so we're forced to improvise with way better house rules.
