Donovanosis (Granuloma inguinale) is a rare sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the United States.
Causes
Donovanosis is caused by the bacterium Klebsiella granulomatis. The disease is commonly found in tropical and subtropical areas, such as southeastern India, Guyana, and New Guinea. Approximately 100 cases are reported each year in the United States. Most of them occur in people who have traveled to, or come from, places where the disease is common.
The disease is spread mainly through vaginal or anal intercourse. On very rare occasions, it is spread during oral sex.
Most infections occur in people between the ages of 20 and 40.
