I don't think it violates your agency. My understanding of hynosis is that contrary to how it is portrayed in the movies, you can't be convinced to do anything through hypnosis that you wouldn't do if you weren't hypnotised.
I don't know of any particular stand that the Church has taken on this subject. It seems that hypnosis can be used as a powerful, wonderful tool for some things, such as resolving some mental health issues, overcoming some addictions, and building up self-confidence.
The Church takes an interesting stand on this... they say that it is the decision of competent medical authorities as to the use of hypnosis to treat medical disorders, however the Church is also clear to point out that members should NOT participate in it for demonstration or entertainment.

So, where does that place self-hypnosis? Is it a valid means of trying to overcome difficulties such as self-conciousness in social situations or to develop strong goals? |
I haven't studied it in depth, but read about it many years ago.
There are techniques you can use to implant knowledge and behaviours deep within your subconscious. One technique in particular that I remember is to record information onto a tape, and play it while you sleep.
Many meditation techniques are somewhat related to hypnosis.
Sorry I can't help more.
