Emmett Till murder investigation closed by Justice Department, which couldn't prove a new claim that a key witness lied. Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago, was lynched in 1955 in Mississippi. Till was accused of whistling at a white woman, and was then kidnapped by several white men, tortured and killed. His battered body was found three days later in the Tallahatchie River. The viciousness of the killing rocked the nation. Two white men were acquitted by an all-white jury that year. The Justice Department reopened the case in 2018, on potentially new information.
