It may be practical for space faring vessels to carry their cargo, or even superfluous material on the nose of the craft. There are asteroids, meteors, micro-meteors, and more material and/or anomalies out there that may hinder or destroy a space faring vessel unless there is a sufficient 'shield'. Though this extra mass may complicate matters regarding navigation and velocity.
