China vs Taiwan

This thread is not the same as 'China vs. USA' wherein China is discussed on a global scale. This is about the dispute between China and Taiwan. Do you feel that Taiwan should drop its barriers and find itself unified with China? Some coutries say 'yes' and others say 'no'.

TAIWAN AWAITS CHINESE LAW DECISION

Relations between Taiwan and mainland China are set to be a key issue at Beijing's annual session of parliament, which begins under tight security on Saturday.

Considering that Taiwan is running from communism I cannot blame them for wanting to be independent from China. Recently our local government signed a multi-million dollar contract with China to supply asphalt in preparation for the China Olympics and then they added their support for the reunification of Taiwan with China, yet, we are supposed to be a strong supporter of Democracy. It just goes to show - money talks. You will also find that countries that are interested in China's money will also find themselves supporting a reunification.

My take on the situation: Re-unification is a given. The window of opportunity for Taiwan independence has closed and both sides know it.

The cross-straights exchanges, often bellicose, is nothing more than political maneouvering for power. Taipei wants its eventual unification with China to be done on its own terms, while Beijing would prefer to leave Taiwan as little maneovering room as possible.

In an unusual move, the KMT sent a small delegation into China on a five day visit that ended in Beijing. The move may or may not benefit the KMT domestically, but it has also likely damaged Taiwan's bargaining power.

One has to wonder if China is not bent on war or preparing for an attack - why the military build up?

Rumsfeld warns on China military

SINGAPORE (AP) -- China's military buildup, particularly its positioning of hundreds of missiles facing Taiwan, is a threat to Asian security, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Saturday.

Rumsfeld rebuked China at a regional security conference in Singapore, saying it was pouring huge resources into its military and buying large amounts of sophisticated weapons despite facing no threat from any other country.

China Taiwan

Tension surrounding Taiwan and China continues to increase. Will China resort to force? Will the world step in? This is history in the making.

Any person who gets on the wrong side of history is doomed to failure.
- China's President and Communist Party Secretary Hu Jintao, February 28, on Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian.

THE war of words across the Taiwan Strait - closer these past few days to a shooting war - is developing into a testing ground for the future of Asia. These are history wars on which lives depend. The big question, for Hu Jintao, too, is who will eventually prove on the wrong side.

China and Taiwan will be unified (the one China policy of the U.S.). It is analagous to the Confederacy still holding power in South Carolina. We would not stand for that.

Hopefully we can get some kind of a tit for tat. We get to reunify Korea and they get to take Taiwan.
