I talked to my dad last weekend and the topic of unpasteurized milk was in the air due to a local person sending it to the city at a premium price. The group was all older then I and they stated well we drank it as kids and we are ok.
My dad reply in a calm manner simply replied are you really so sure? Remember you brother he had stomach problems and intestinal issues for a long time as a child. Sound familiar to the news yesterday?( achild was hospitalized from drinking raw milk which had bacteri in it and caused major intestinal pain and vomiting.) He then continued to site many people they knew who's young children died of symptoms that are similar to this ones listed for this infection.
My dads point was that this is not new by any means just diagnosed properly for a change.
I think as a populace North Americans have become complacent in food handling and it is showing its head more and more often.
My dad always fried cold cuts as he claimed it could be contaminated and perhaps it was so more often when he was young. Now we just accept that all the chemicals we pump into the meat will kill it and have forgotten what used to be 30 or 40 years back.
The other major issue we face is one plant will provide food or contaminate food at a rate the before was never possible. If a local butcher messed up he could quickly recover the damaged goods as he likely knew by name who bought it or how much is effected. In modern food plants it is very hard to track and this is why such a mass recall has been done.
I have a great amount of respect for this being done. I just hope in the end Maple Leaf meats survives. I can happen to the same scale in any large food processing plant.

This is one reason why I nuke my meat before eating cold cuts. I have always eaten heated foods. I hardly ever eat a sandwich that I have not placed in the microwave to heat it up. I like my meat to be hot when I eat it.
Looks like we expanded past maple leaf meats and into mushrooms and cheese though they claim no connection last I heard.
