I would like to offer some points for consideration:
If I recall correctly, Lucifer is referred to as a "son of the morning", and one of the choice spirits in the pre-existence prior to his apparent rebellion in the heavenly council. As such, I suspect he possesses great intelligence.
The plan of salvation set forth by the Father required his children to be sent to a world where each would gain a mortal physical body and experience all feelings and sensations associated with that state. He also caused a veil to fall over the minds of his children, so that they would need to exercise faith, a quintessential skill needed to become like our Father.
Christ was ordained before the earth was created to be the saviour of mankind, which I preceive implies that the existence of sin was also an essential part of the plan. This goes back to the logic laid down by Lehi, that there must be opposition in all things. Christ is the saviour of the world, while Lucifer is his opposite, and anti-christ, if you will.
I've begun to lean towards the notion that Satan was also ordained to be the anti-redeemer, and that he is operating under the direction of the Father. The alternative is that an intelligence far greater than many who have lived on the earth just happened to rebel and is an unwitting facilitator of God's plan. He. who after thousands of years of witnessing how one of the effects of evil in the world (and I believe the principal reason it is permitted to exist) is the immense spiritual growth in those who courageously resist it and act righteously in the face of evil, is still clueless to this fact? It just doesn't add up for me.
Of course, we have verse after verse of holy writ referring to Lucifer as the father of lies, and an enemy of righteousness. The only thing I've come up with to explain this is that if the scriptures painted Lucifer in the light that I have suggested, people might be misled to have an improper perspective (like perhaps I have?).
I don't wish to be misunderstood: I still strongly consider Lucifer to be the adversary. I simply don't consider him as evil in the usual sense of the word. Yes, he tempts to do that which is wicked in the sight of the Lord, but that is what he is supposed to be doing. I, in turn, am supposed to resist, and will be stronger if I persevere in my efforts.
There are larger implications of my line of reasoning, which would be better served in a new thread.
Onetrue steve I fail to see how anything that you have said contradicts what my "ideas" are on this matter.
The priesthood laws govern everything. They are scientific laws that need to be understood in order to use them correctly. I actually have no disagreement with your last post.
I am just saying that people should be careful and my qualifications for these matters at this time are not sufficient to do things like this.
Also people's faith has more to do with casting out demons than anything. We are instruments. And most of us are incomplete ones at best. I am sure you understand this.

I suspect that my uncle did so with pride, as most of us expect to do. When we cast them out, we must not empower them with pride, which bringeth destruction. We must do so with humility, knowing that we are acting in the stead of Christ, and that it is really He who is doing the deed. |

[What an interesting post. I'm also interested in how Quasar could be seeing so many demons? Maybe he has some sort of gift? |
I would say off like ignoring. Not paying attention to something annoying. Don't feed the beast or it will come back. Have no reaction towards.
On a side note I think that if a priesthood brother is virtuous and pure in heart then he can do anything. I believe they can cast these dark spirits out without ever seeing them. I think that a clean soul can do a lot of things and not really know what is going on, but have the faith to take direction from the spirit.
Unfortinatly most of us have to see the varmint if you know what I mean. I do believe that the Galahad types exist though. Perhaps we need look little further than the prophets themselves. They seem to be a fine collection of men with no ill backgrounds and the willingness to serve their fellow man with God like principles. However, I do believe our prophets know full well what is going on and see everything they need to.
Nothing puts me further to the quick like a Quote from one of these great men. Moving mountains is one thing, but the ability to influence a man's soul to the good is a completely different matter. That is real power.
A complete 180 of how I used to view them.
I had somehow missed this thread but it is very interesting.
I was under the impression that Satan did have some priesthood and that was how he was able to work here BUT that he only had what Christ allowed him. Does that sound familiar to anyone else?
The other thing that came to my mind was,
"What the Lord initiates, Satan imitates." Speaking of power and symbols and such. Satan will take things that are pure and seem to be right and turn them to his purposes.
I once heard that if someone has the gift to see good spirits, such in the case of a deceased ancestor or something like that--they have that same gift to see them in an evil sense as well. Just curious Quasar if you see good spirits as well?
I won't dwell on this last thought too long before thinking it more through but I do feel that if you are in a circumstance where you are not right with the Lord and then try and turn back you can almost EXPECT to get individual attention from satan's minions.
Another thought about demons powers is the actual physical force from the unseen. Such as the example from OneTrueSteve. There is obviously some power there....I just don't quite understand it.
Quasar you said that when they depart they....well I went back to quote it and can't find it! I thought somewhere it mentioned that they leave one body to just go to another. Maybe I read it wrong and that is why I can't find it! Anyhow, it made me think about the demons Christ casted out that went into the swine. Someone told me once it was because they just wanted a body--they didn't care if it was human. Any truth to that?

Comments: If we had never messed with things about which we did not understand we would still be in England. And why not? The spiritual realm is no different than our own with complex intelligence main difference is we have a physical body. The church has established baptizms for the dead and as we all can see from the rise in spiritual and paranormal activity we are far from being done here.
