Desperate For The USA

There are many reports about people trying to get into the US, so I started this thread to document and discuss the many ways they try. NOTE: this thread is not to discuss the ethics of it as there is another thread about that in the Activism Board.

CUBANS TURN TAXI INTO BOAT FOR BORDER RUN
The you.S. Coast Guard on Tuesday pulled over a 1948 blue taxi that had been refurbished with a boat's prow to ply the sea between Cuba and Florida.

It's amazing and sad how desperate illegals can be to get into a better country. I truly feel for them. I saw a doco on Mexican illegals using "coyotes" to trek through the desert. It sounds extremely dangerous. This show also said there were armed civilian vigilante groups who went around trying to rein them in, is this true?

In Australia the most notorious way illegals arrive is via boats, generally from Indonesia which has a huge people smuggling racket. It's very dangerous and there are often a lot of deaths. Even if they do make it our disgraceful government locks them up in prisons in desert like conditions, sometimes for years.

But in fact the most common and successful way illegals come into our country is through holiday or working visas. There are literally hundreds of thousands of British illegals who have flown here, overstayed their visa and settled down.

What would be the most common method in the US?

In this country many come in or educational visas are vacation visas and just stay. I think this is likely how those from Europe and Asia arrive and stay illegally.

From Mexico, Central America and South America, many walk. Many are also smuggled in the back of trucks and in the trunks of cars.

EDITORIAL: DON'T FORGET LEGAL IMMIGRANTS

When people hear the word "immigration," they think "illegal immigration." They think of Mexico, Managua and all points south. But immigration entails much, much more.

I may be wrong, but if you say 'illegal' in the USA, someone's mind might just fall on 'Mexican'. However, look at this report:

Non-Mexicans arrested at U.S. border nearly doubled

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of people from countries other than Mexico arrested trying to cross the U.S. southern border has almost doubled this year, the head of the U.S. border patrol told the U.S. Congress on Tuesday. David Aguilar told the House of Representatives appropriations subcommittee on homeland security the United States was continuing to experience a rising influx of what he termed OTMs -- other than Mexicans -- trying to enter the country illegally.

I believe there currently is a "Green Card" lottery system currently established in the USA which allows people that win a chance to live the "American Dream". Maybe this is a form of legal immigration.

In Malaysia, where I reside in and graft is rife, there are instances of people practically paying to marry someone at the border for they are allowed to stay in Malaysia on the excuse that they have a relation over there. Most of these people are from places like Thailand, Myanmar or Nepal and they usually just end up as prostitutes, which is sad really.

I also believe that in the US of A, migrant workers who get caught get deported and then what happens is that when they return to wherever they come from to re enter into the USA. This is not from personal experience.

Anyway, it's really sad the things migrants(illegal) do to try to get themselves and their loved ones a better life.

Did anyone hear about the recent situation where 15 Cubans attempted to come to the US by boat and got to an abandoned bridge off the Florida keys? The US Coast Guard picked them up at the bridge, and since the bridge was no longer attached to the mainland, the judgement was made that they technically weren't on US soil yet. They were then deported. There is a rule (wetfoot/dryfoot) that if illegal immigrants are picked up in the water, they will be automatically deported. However, if they happen to reach land, then they can stay.
Well, today a federal judge ruled that the Coast Guard acted unreasonably and that the Cubans should have been allowed to stay. It is amazing to me that we are needing to amend immigration laws to account for situations like this, but it seems there are a large number of activist groups whose sole agendas are ensuring that illegal immigrants get their due. It is not clear whether these Cubans will get to return to the US, but it definitely makes for interesting reading. See more details through this article on CNN.com
