Let me see if I can help out without giving it away.

I am ubiquitous, meaning I can be anywhere and in many places at once.
Almost anyone can create me. I can be seen but cannot be heard. (that would rule out your tv & movies, eh?)

Think of the time frame when I first appeared.

I am not a person, however, it is debatable about whether or not I began as a real person.

I was more prevalent in the past but I am still seen around the world today.

Now I am down to one genere but that still has two outlets and I need to look at the creation dates. But yes I was thinking silent movies at one time but time frame messed it up. Same as cell or radio and internet.

But I do have an item to looky back in a sec.

Ok I am going to make my guess and go with the lectrophotography photocopier or the Polaroid camera. No longer in use but distance cousins are.

I have doubts but ok for now.
