Granted, most people spell it Kabbalah. I suppose I should too. You may have found it spelled in several ways during your search online. It is from the Hebrew, thus there are several ways it could be put into English. For instance, Hugh Nibley referred to the Kabbalah in positive fashion. Here he discusses the War Scroll in the Dead Sea Scrolls:
QUOTE |
""¦hearing the glorious voices, seeing holy angels, open of ear, understanding deep things, even the mysteries." Then it goes into cosmology which the Jews are supposed to leave alone. The Talmud says it's better that a man was not born than to bring up subjects like this. Then he goes into this sort of thing: ""¦the expanse of the skies, the hosts of the luminaries [the stars], the domain of the spirits and the dominion of the holy ones, the treasures of glory"¦He hath created the earth and its boundaries of her divisions into the wilderness and the plain land"¦" This goes into your cosmological, cabalistic doctrine that was rejected by the rabbis after the fall of the temple. The Book of Mormon is full of it.---Teachings of the Book of Mormon v3 (H. Nibley) >> Alma 46: Evidence of the Authenticity of the Book of Mormon |
Notice here, that Brother Nibley spells it "Cabalistic," from the spelling "Cabala." My rule of thumb is that if is spelled with a "Q" its bad kabbalah (Magic and stuff), usually with a "K" it isn't too wacko, yet as one can see on the interesting forum pointed out by JB, even Kabbalah with a "K" has a lot of recent stuff added to it.
Note that Hugh Nibley infers that the Jews lost knowledge in losing the Kabbalah, but that we have lots of it in the Book of Mormon!
We are interested in the ancient form of the Kabbalah. I believe we can sort the ancient from the more recent accretions through an understanding of modern revelation.
Here are a few juicy tidbits from a book I recently finished reading called, "The Holy Kabbalah," by A. E. Waite, a renowned scholar of the Kabbalah. He writes, speaking of Adam and Eve:
QUOTE |
There are two places in which the garments of skin are said to be robes of glory with which they were clothed by God, in which they left Paradise, in virtue of which they resembled those who are on high, and wherein they were ultimately buried. -p.285. |
QUOTE |
Samael is the tempter spirit (Devil), whose purpose is to put man to the test... |
And now, quotes showing that the Kabbalistic Jews knew that God has a body:
QUOTE |
...the anthropomorphic SHIUR KOMAH, I.e., THE MEASURE OF THE HEIGHT, or MEASURE OF BEING, in other words, the DESCRIPTION OF THE BODY OF GOD, a development of the various Scriptural places in which divine members are mentioned. |
Discussing a section of the Zohar titled, "The Faithful Shepherd," he says:
QUOTE |
conversations between Simeon ben Yohai (a great kabbalist) and Moses, who appeared to the great light of Kabbalism and gave him many instructions and revelations. Elijah took part in the conference, and the witnesses included not only Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Aaron, David and Slolmon, but God Himself. This indicates that in spite of the exalted doctrine concerning AIN SOPH( supposedly a state of God's non-existence to us, per late Kabbalism), the Zohar recurs occasionally to the same anthropomorphic conceptions that are found in the Talmud. |
As you can see, this is some serious reading.
And, interestingly, children not only do not go to hell if they die young, but:
QUOTE |
...there is that which is said on the place of children in the world to come, namely, that there is a sojourn reserved for them which is higher than that of the just made perfect. |
So, kids have it made in heaven!
Anyway, that has to be it for now. Next, I"ll post some of the Kabbalistic techniques for interpreting scripture, along with some of their fruits in my studies.
