I talked to one of my friends about this a couple of years ago. He isn't mormon. He believes in god very strongly but not in any religion. He doesn't receive visions or dreams really, or didn't.
He is in real estate and basically lost his butt in it lately. He has been really stressed out and unbearable to talk to. He called me up and said he had an experience like this about a week ago He sincerely prayed about his situation. He saw beautiful cities and buildings with vibrantly colored landscape. He went into more details about the different building styles and so on. He said that it was real. The impression he got was not to worry so much about this world that there was plenty of real estate out there. He is completely chilled out now. His was when he was sitting down and facing the sunny sky. I thought that was strange.
There are many other people that have talked to me about this sort of thing. I don't really think that it has to be a special individual to receive visions. Unless you take into consideration that we are all special. We all have the same parts and all of our spirits come from God. Ask and ye shall receives. Sometimes he does answer prayers with visions.
I think that the prophets talk to him face to face sometimes. Not visions, but I actually believe that they walk and talk with God. They are celestial beings. Of course if they were to come out and talk to us about that we would probably think they were crazy. I wouldn't. I think that telestial beings can receive visions though. I imagine if I would have died 4 years ago I would have been in spirit prison.
I think it is more of a faith issue. I have to wonder about the faith of the individual that does not believe that these things happen. Don't believe me. I probably would question it. I actually did for several weaks after. especially this sort of thing.
I think it happens all the time and it is really not a big deal any more. There is a whole different part of the world that exists here. That is just a fact.
| Rather off topic, but... If anyone has a hard time with these sorts of things happening to people like me, just think of the story about the prodigal son. When the father was so excited on his return that he ran up to great him. The other son was mad and the father had to explain that he thought that his other son was lost. You all know the story. From the prodigal son's point of view. He was beaten by the world and didn't have anywhere else to go. I don't even think that the prodigal son expected his father to take him back. I imagine that he expected to go threw the rest of his life spiritually destitute because of his foolishness. We are all in fact prodigal in one way or another. |

You may be surprised at how many members have had "prodigal experiences" of their own. That is the beauty of the Atonement, we leave our past behind and move forward through His grace. Anyway, I had a great response to this thread written last night and then the page froze. I was too tired to re-write it. I may put something together later this evening. But maybe I wasn't supposed to post what I wrote. |
The heavens are not sealed and anyone may have this kind of experience if they are appropriately prepared and/or the Lord feels it is necessary. I will have to expound on this later as I am being summoned to a meeting.

It is my own lack of faith that would limit my belief on this. But, I admit that spiritual manifestations are a fact. My wife has had one with a family member, and I believe her completely (She would have to tell this).
So it would depend on the relationship I had with the person. I would believe someone closer to me, a lot easier then I would believe some member of the Church coming up to me and relaying this. This is possibly a character flaw, but it seems that familiarity breeds in me believability.
I have faith that these things happens all the time, but I do not believe that it is a thing that should always be broadcasted to the world unless directed by God through the spirit.

Dbackers, you would have been like Thomas then when the Apostles told him they have seen Christ. 
But is absolutely understandable, we do tend to believe in people who are closer to us. I tend to look at their demeanor and let the Spirit confirm or reject the message regardless of who the person is.

Yah, but there is a difference between a spiritual manifestation and a vision. The body (your body) has a spirit. It can manifest itself to a person after death, or it can come in the form of a vision or dream.
My understanding of this is that the person only has three days to do this after death if the spirit is going to the paradise part of the spirit world (I think). I have heard many stories of people that do geneology that have manifestations of the person they are doing the work for. They have to be baptised to go to paradise. and the person doesn't get another vision or appearance from that individual after the work is done. Strange world and a fascinating subject.
I am always a little surprised that more people in the church don't have something like this. I am not talking about a vision of christ. I am talking about any experience of the other worldly realm (good or bad). It is all over the scriptures.

Agreed. I don't think it is a character flaw to be skeptical. Especially about this.

I probably would have been, to an extent (It would have depended on my level of understanding at the time, concerning the Resurrection of Christ).
But Thomas wasn't such a bad guy (I never understood why he always got such a bad rap.)

Many of his other disciples were trying to persuade Jesus not to go to raise lazarus from the dead, but Thomas declared his willingness to die with him.
I guess one has varying levels of faith in his life, and different gifts that he has been given. I should probably work on aspects of my faith, but I believe my loyalties are unimpeachable.

"Joseph Smiths first vision".
Who did Joseph Smith as a 14 year old share it with? Was it too sacred to share? How did the world receive it? How would you have received it?
The Lord never criticized him for sharing any revelation etc. yet many PEOPLE criticized him.
Why should we treat any member differently than we would have treated a 14 year old nobody in the world's eyes.
The below letter is from a friend of mine who I have shared a lot with about this forum and who has given me input here and there on topics we discuss here. The author (and Mother it is to) of this letter was so interested in what you all were saying on this topic that they asked me to post this for them"¦ It's a letter of encouragement to a mother in having born witness of her visions of the Savior and in response to the upset she encountered from a dear friend whom when she had shared her witness with her declared that if it was true she would never have shared it"¦ The mother in this story was very hurt and upset by the reaction of her friend Here is the letter:

What happens in almost every case to those who have had a vision, dream or personal visit from the Savior? Their hearts are full of light and Love. They seek only the wellbeing of others. They seek to aid the Lord in the preparation for the Millennium. They are better people seeking to Love and Serve. They have a greater understanding of the spirit and desire to follow the Holy Ghost, and do the Will of God! If you were Satan, would you try to stop that from happening on a large scale now, before it was too late? Or would you just happily sit by and watch as the entire world slips rapidly from your grasp, as they systematically and in mass learn that the promises of God are sure, and there is nothing he can do about it?!? Seems to me like Satan might want to stop that now, before he has no power left! And that is why this lie of if they have it is too sacred etc. etc. is so effective, and so dangerous to the plan of the Lord, and to the ushering in of the Second Coming"¦ (Please know that I realize that in some cases it IS too personal, and that the person is not strong enough to handle the extreme negative feedback that they will likely get from many whom they share it with. And in still other cases they ARE asked not to share, likely to help them to not get all puffed and prideful in their "great knowledge" or a hundred other reasons the lord may use, but in large, this is NOT the case and NOT what the Lord wants of us!) Are we, or are we not encouraged to share our witness, our testimonies? WHY?!? For ourselves? Yes. But also for the conversion of those who hear us"¦ The baring of our witness and of our pure Testimonies converts. The stopping of the mouths of those who bare witness insures Satin a continued reign on this earth. The majority of people who hear the witness of others, receive it also for themselves! That is why we as a church send out missionaries"¦ If their attitudes where that the church and their testimonies of it were 'too sacred to share" and if people believed that any one who professed to have such a testimony was obviously lying, then were would the church be? if you were Satan, and you knew that the more people who received one or both of the witnesses the closer you would be to being "bound" what would you tell the people in an attempt to keep it from spreading?!? I know one really effective thing to say"¦ "Those who have received it will not share it because it is too sacred, and those who tell you they have most certainly have not." In this way faith is NOT increased, and there is a much lesser risk of one new person with whom it is shared, receiving it for themselves. In Sum Up: It is the plan of Satan to keep the knowledge and belief of the possibility of receiving the second comforter (seeing Christ Face-to-Face) and/or having ones Calling & Election Made Sure hidden from the people at all costs so as to continue his reign on this earth. Because if the knowledge became wide spread, many would/will receive it, because it will be a common knowledge, and common occurrence thing, and as you know, the more who receive it the closer the Millennium will be because those who have received are very hard to bring down and almost a waste of time for Satan, and certainly NOT easy prey"¦ So, the more who know and the more who share their knowledge the closer Satan will be to being bound"¦ It has always been this way! It's silly to think that we will draw closer to the Celestial Kingdom by living Terrestrial Laws! Or by NOT learning the Love of Christ from Christ himself! So when a person says "but I thought that those who had that blessing would never share it" they are not bad, just misinformed and duped by the lying doctrines of Satan that are prevalent out there right now"¦ And they are propagated by the very elite who are fooled, because they seem to make sense and be right to them. But can you see why this is what Satan wants?!? And Do you blame him!?! This one piece of information is enough to dethrone him for a very long time! These people don't mean to be hurtful, they just don't know that this is a lie of Satan for the ends described above"¦ We have therefore been called to (among many other things) help people to see that this doctrine is of the Devil and WHY it is"¦ And that we must spread the Gospel, not repress it! And isn't it "Good news" The BEST news that; "I have been redeemed" and that "you too can be redeemed" and even EXALTED! I think that's just about the best news there is"¦ And if those who have received it don't share it, people may receive it"¦ later"¦ maybe. From someone else in the FAR distant future"¦ And that will only put off the coming of the millennium even further! Satan has prevented the masses from receiving these blessings by convincing nearly everyone that these incredible blessings are beyond their grasp. They aren't! They are here for all of us! I am so excited that we get to share in this calling of bringing this knowledge to others! "The more who know, the faster this will go!" That's what I tell people when I get that objection"¦ It's truth. I know it's got to be hard for you, talking to people you know like you do"¦ You"re very gutsy"¦ I wish I could have just HALF of your nerve! But here is something to consider as you beat yourself and learn/grow"¦ In your "mistake" I think you may discover that you are more perfected in God than you realize"¦ To God, our mistakes are part of His/Her perfect plan"¦ There IS Perfection in what we deem mistakes because we learn, and open doors to greater opportunity as I am quite positive you have done here. Is this you Amonhi? Am I understanding if it is that you are saying that you were taught these things (by someone else) AFTER you met with the Lord and that at that time your C&E was made sure? If that is not what you are saying, I am sorry--just trying to clarify. Thanks.
