Canada's Government Expected to Vote on Unborn Victims Bill in March

Ottawa, Canada (LifeNews.com) -- The Canadian government is expected to vote on an unborn victims bill in March that would offer protection and justice for women and their unborn children who are victims of violence. The bill holds criminals accountable for killing or injuring both mother and child in an assault against both. Conservative MP Ken Epp is behind C-484 and he says the legislation addresses a "huge gap" in the law that allows criminals to escape charges in connection with killing or injuring a baby in an attack on her mother. "This is a case when the woman has decided to have that child, and that choice has to be protected in law," Epp told the Winnipeg Sun in a Friday interview. "I've made no secret of the fact that I'm pro-life," he explained. "But this bill goes very narrowly at one issue -- where the woman has made the choice to have the child, and that choice is taken away unilaterally, without her consent and usually with violence." Unlike in the United States, Canadian law does not recognize the unborn child as a second victim in criminal attacks. A baby is not considered a human being worthy of legal protection until after birth.

Canada Lawmaker Responds to Liberal Criticism of Unborn Victims Bill

Ottawa, Canada (LifeNews.com) -- The Canadian MP who is heading up the effort to protect pregnant women and unborn children and give them justice when they are violent attacked is defending his bill again from criticism. Liberal Party leader Stephane Dion recently attacked it as have MPs from Quebec. Conservative MP Ken Epp stepped up efforts to defend the private member's bill and said he has no "hidden agenda" behind it. He accused opponents of the bill of running a "massive misinformation campaign" designed to make it look like an abortion bill that would place new limits on abortion. In a press conference on Tuesday, according to a Canwest News Service report, Epp said the bill specifically exempts abortion. "To those of you actively campaigning against this bill, I say this: Please stop frightening Canadians about the effect of the bill based on your misreading of it," Epp said. Epp was joined by several French-speaking supporters of the bill, including family members of victims who say that they didn't receive adequate justice after the attacks since the baby was not considered a victim.

I think this bill needs to be passed and that is is a step in the right direction for accountability for destroying the hopes and dreams of a couple. I do question if their will be further ramification if it is passed for the push of pro lifers on the abortion issue.

I wonder about this bill. If it is passed and a woman gets pregnant and tells the father she is pregnant, if she then decideds to abort it without telling father. Can he take her to court for the murder of his unborn child? I know this bill is for protecting both the mother and the child but I can see it being used by a fathers right group to stop a woman form making that choice too. This can cause issues on both sides to be up in arms.

That is just the snag that will stop this bill I am sure. I do question that also. Is the resolution coming up with a time statue in weeks as t how old the baby must before the law takes effect? Say 3 months to stay away from the abortion issues. Also most natural miscarriages occur in that time frame as well. It would be a huge amount of details to be worked out to make the law work as natural causes for abortions would have to be accounted for. If you drink then you could also be charged for will fill intent on causing bodily harm to the baby same as smoking.

Canada Abortion Advocates March in Quebec to Oppose Bill Protecting Women

Montreal, Canada (LifeNews.com) -- A couple thousand abortion advocates took to the streets in Quebec on Sunday to oppose the administration of Conservative Party Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The pro-abortion activists also marched against a bill that would protect and provide justice to pregnant women and their unborn children. The Quebec Women's Federation and Quebec Family Planning Federation organized the march, which took place in Montreal, to prevent the re-election of the Conservatives to power. They also opposed bill C-484, a private member's legislation to allow prosecutors to charge criminals with two crimes when they kill or injure both a pregnant mother and her unborn child. Currently, assailants who attack a woman and her child are only held responsible for killing or injuring the mother, and there is no restitution for the attack on the baby.

I don't understand why they are so worked up. This bill is an important one and, unless I misread the earlier post, it specifically exempts prosecution for abortion.

I think it is also an opportunity for the two groups to catch some publicity regardless of why they are there. I agree I think there is little issue in the law.
