Yes some cultures do. Just like here we let young children suck on soothers till 4 to 5 which is far worse as it does have adverse health effects. I also rather see a child breast feeding rather then stuck on a plastic bottle though some times you have no choice.

For me it is just common sense the child has teeth and should be eating. Assuming food is available then why continue. If it was sick yes then it could help. Heavy and over use of milk in children has been linked to diabetes later in life. So that would be the only argument against milk in large amounts but that would not apply to just breast feeding as you can control the frequency. How every painful that might be.

You all believe what you like on the breast feeding thin, because I don't know.

Rather off topic, but...
alaskan, my sister would tell you the same thing I would. A child needs a man around to show this and that. You can think whatever society tells you on this. I am not backing down from it. Children are better off with a male figure around. Look at the stats.

My sister has kicked the crap out of a dude before (before me or anyone else could get to him I should say), but she understands what a male can do as far as influence goes. There has to be a good male influence. It changes everything. Otherwise we are just useless drones.

OK, I am going to go at this in a totally different direction. The earliest retained memory on average is 3.5 years old. I am going to say that I want to have a normal psyche and as few sexual hangups as possible, so I dont want to remember breastfeeding. Lets be safe and stop a bit earlier to make sure there is no long term memory and is fully encompassed in my childhood amnesia as Frued would say. Therefore, I would put a cap on breastfeeding at 2.5 years or 30 months, since we are talking about toddlers.

Quasar, you obviously don't know me very well if you think I give a rat's a** what society thinks. I did not say anything about the importance or lack thereof a male father figure in a child's life. I said single women can be great mothers and raise great kids. I did not say ALL single mothers. I am fully aware of the importance of a father (and a mother) in the lives of children of both genders. I have written theses and done extensive research on the subject. No doubt about it there is a need for both fathers and mothers.
And the ability to kick the crap out of anyone has no correlation on how effective your parenting skills are.

As for that "sucking thing" some children need more sucking than others, for whatever reason. Usually the need is met through a pacifier or a thumb once they have been weaned.

Regardless they should be totally weaned off everything before they start school, which now days most kids start school around 4 years old.

JB: Removed the quote of an off topic just for aesthetics. Maybe you guys need to open a new Thread for Single Mothers - in fact I'm pretty sure some already exist. Just use "Single Mother" in the Search with quotes so it looks for both words in that combination.

I have only one thing to say for the males in the community: Until you all grow breasts of your own, have milk on them and actually breastfeed, then listen to what those who DID/DO breastfeed experience about it. They know what they are talking about.

Rather off topic, but...
I hope you all don't go around telling your wives that the pain they experience during childbirth is entirely psychological, like if you know what is that all about ! Don't get me started eh! rolleyes.gif

foreverLDS do you think all women view it the way you do? To be honest most women I know think it is disgusting to think of feeding a child over 3 that way.

My wife and I have discussed this with our friends before and I am sorry maybe like alskann says it is just culture, but I agree with Vincenzo. Who wants the memory of suckling when you are an adult.

As far as pacifiers I think they are a waste of monies My mother was one of 12 I am 1 of 4 and I have 5 nephews and 2 of my own we all seem to have made out ok with out one. Fyi none of us were thumb suckers either. One has ponder what we did for thousands of years without them huh.

I know 3 little girls who has speech impediments due to those nasty soothers pacifies teeth bender roof fo mouth destroyers. You desire to take the chance on the feel free.

I am referring to children with out difficulties or handicaps.

.

Disgusting you said? What kind of women you are around Krakyn? spock.gif

Let me say again I would personally not breastfeed a child over 3 years old BUT I won't judge a mother who does it because I do not know her child neither her circumstances.
