Hudson City Bancorp
The Little Bank That Could
Huge banks totally collapsing or being sold at a cut rate because their eyes got too big for their stomachs. Lehman Brothers and Washington Mutual filing for bankruptcy. Bank of America rescuing Merrill Lynch, and Wachovia Corp. trying to do the same for Wells Fargo & Co. During this financial crisis, bigger has been anything but better in the banking industry. Consider a bank such as Hudson City Bancorp, headquartered in Paramus, N.J., with 125 branches in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. Hudson City is the tortoise that took a slow and steady approach to beataing those hares. ABC News correspondent Vicki Mabrey looks at one bank that's managed to continue growing while others wilt.
