Confrontation in Ukraine as diplomacy stalls
A pro-Russian force opened fire in seizing a Ukrainian military base in Crimea on Monday and NATO announced reconnaissance flights along its eastern frontiers as confrontation around the Black Sea peninsula showed no sign of easing. Ref. Source 2
Russia allows Ukrainian surveillance flight to confirm no troops near border:
In a confidence-building step, Russia's Defense Ministry has given permission for a surveillance flight by Ukraine over Russian territory near the border between the countries. Kiev had claimed Moscow was building up its military presence there. Ref. Source 6
On a day in which Russia declared its annexation of Crimea official, Ukraine's prime minister called the move "A robbery on an international scale."
A spokesman for Ukraine's Defense Ministry said on Facebook that one of its soldiers had been killed at a base in Crimea. Earlier, the spokesman said the base in Simferopol had been attacked by armed people wearing masks.
Ukraine's interim President Oleksandr Turchynov told reporters that Russian President Vladimir Putin is "Mimicking the fascists of the last century" By annexing Crimea.
And Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Ukraine's prime minister, warned the confrontation was transforming "From political to the military form." Ref. CNN
There is only a few outcomes that I can readily see to this:
1. Ukraine and Russia go to war with the US / EU backing Ukraine
2. The US / EU and Ukraine go to war
3. There is a lot of sanctions and what not but Crimea remains a part of Russia
1 or 2 could mean a restart to the Cold War and with the shaky global economy this can spell lots of trouble for the world - oil and food.
