Seeking Truth - What Sources And How Do You Know..

I am reminded of a lesson in the President Taylor manual called "Eternal Truth". In it Taylor says,

QUOTE
In regard to our religion, I will say that it embraces every principle of truth and intelligence pertaining to us as moral, intellectual, mortal and immortal beings, pertaining to this world and the world that is to come.

I will now tell you about some of my feelings when I first came into this church. It is a long while ago. When I first heard the gospel, I was compelled to admit there was something reasonable about it. I almost hoped it was not true. "If it is true," said I, "as an honest man I shall be obliged to obey it, or else I cannot have any confidence in myself." When I had investigated the subject, and became convinced that it was true, I said, "I am in for it; I must embrace it; I cannot reject the principles of eternal truth." And I will say, moreover, I don't know of a time in my life when, if anybody presented a truth that could not be controverter, but I was ready to obey it and I am today.

If any person in the religious world, or the political world, or the scientific world, will present to me a principle that is true, I am prepared to receive it, no matter where it comes from. Well, says one, you believe the Bible? Yes. You believe in the Book of Mormon? Yes. You believe the Book of Doctrine and Covenants? Yes. I believe all that God has ever written or spoken, everything that we have on record, and I am prepared to believe everything that he will communicate to the human family.

Clearly there a many inspired books not contained in our modern cannon. In Joseph Smith's day, one such known record was the Apocrypha. Joseph saught a revelation regarding these various books and received D&C 91 as quoted below:

QUOTE
1 Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you concerning the Apocrypha-There are many things contained therein that are true, and it is mostly translated correctly;
  2 There are many things contained therein that are not true, which are interpolations by the hands of men.
  3 Verily, I say unto you, that it is not needful that the Apocrypha should be translated.
  4 Therefore, whoso readeth it, let him understand, for the Spirit manifesteth truth;
  5 And whoso is enlightened by the Spirit shall obtain benefit therefrom;
  6 And whoso receiveth not by the Spirit, cannot be benefited. Therefore it is not needful that it should be translated. Amen.

Doesn't that sound a little similar to the Bible? We accept the Bible as the word of God as long as it is translated correctly, and yet we still have the KJV rather than the Joseph Smith Inspired translation in our "Cannon"...
So, our Canonized Bible is the word of God compiled and edited by the non-Christian Constantine to support his political purposes. So many plain and precious truths were taken from it. But, with the aid of the spirit it is still a valuable book.

There are 11 books in the Apocrypha. Under "Lost Books" in the bible dictionary is says,
QUOTE
The so-called lost books of the Bible are those documents that are mentioned in the Bible in such a way that it is evident they are considered authentic and valuable, but that are not found in the Bible today...The foregoing items attest to the fact that our present Bible does not contain all of the word of the Lord that he gave to his people in former times, and remind us that the Bible, in its present form, is rather incomplete.
There are well over 15 Books missing from the bible.

The Book of Mormon refers to 5 Books not found in any modern scripture including the Writings of Zenock, Zenos, and Neum.

The doctrine and covenants refers to some Books which are also not canonized, one reference is found in D&C 107:
QUOTE
  55 And the Lord administered comfort unto Adam, and said unto him: I have set thee to be at the head; a multitude of nations shall come of thee, and thou art a prince over them forever.
  56 And Adam stood up in the midst of the congregation; and, notwithstanding he was bowed down with age, being full of the Holy Ghost, predicted whatsoever should befall his posterity unto the latest generation.
  57 These things were all written in the book of Enoch, and are to be testified of in due time.
Neal A Maxwell said,
QUOTE
Latter-day Saints expectantly await the book of Enoch as being among the "many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God" which God "will yet reveal." (A of F 1:9.) As Professor Robert Matthews has observed, through Joseph Smith we received eighteen times as much as is in the Bible concerning Enoch. Without the Restoration, we would not even know there was a City of Enoch! - Neal A. Maxwell, ""A Choice Seer"," Ensign, Aug 1986, 6

When the Book of Enoch was found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, Hugh Nibley did a 13 part article printed in the Ensign over a 2 year period called, "A Strange Thing in the Land, The Return of the Book of Enoch"

The list of so called "inspired writings" could go on and on. President Taylor continued in his address regarding Eternal Truth,
QUOTE
If there are any good principles, any moral philosophy that we have not yet attained to, we are desirous to learn them. If there is anything in the scientific world that we do not yet comprehend, we desire to become acquainted with it. If there is any branch of philosophy calculated to promote the well-being of humanity, that we have not yet grasped, we wish to possess ourselves of it. If there is anything pertaining to the rule and government of nations, or politics, if you please, that we are not acquainted with, we desire to possess it. If there are any religious ideas, any theological truths, any principles pertaining to God, that we have not learned, we ask mankind, and we pray God, our Heavenly Father, to enlighten our minds that we may comprehend, realize, embrace, and live up to them as part of our religious faith.

Then he says something that is jaw dropping!
QUOTE
A man in search of truth has no peculiar system to sustain, no peculiar dogma to defend or theory to uphold.

There is no man nor set of men who have pointed out the pathway for our feet to travel in, in relation to these matters. There are no dogmas nor theories extant in the world that we profess to listen to, unless they can be verified by the principles of eternal truth. We carefully scan, investigate, criticize, and examine everything that presents itself to our view, and so far as we are enabled to comprehend any truths in existence, we gladly hail them as part and portion of the system with which we are associated.

[/B]If there is any truth in heaven, earth, or hell, I want to embrace it; I care not what shape it comes in to me, who brings it, or who believes in it; whether it is popular or unpopular, truth, eternal truth, I wish to float in and enjoy.

If there "is no man or set of men who have pointed out the pathway for our feet to travel" in finding Eternal Truth, and we do not sustain, defend or uphold any system, dogma or theories, and it can come from heaven or hell, then how do we recognize truth?

It seems that we are afraid of anything that has not been placed on the "Approved Reading list" for fear that we might loss our faith, learn something terrible or be deceived by tricky lies. What supposed sources of Truth are worth our time investigating? When we read them, how can we recognize the truth from the error?
