105-year-old Virgin 'didn't Buy Into Marriage'

QUOTE
"I made my mind up at the age of 12 never to marry and I've not gone back on that," Clara Meadmore told the Daily Mail in Truro, Cornwall.

Her family emigrated to New Zealand in 1910, when she was seven, but she moved back to Britain alone in her 20s, and has never had sex in her life because intimate relationships seemed like "a lot of hassle".

Miss Meadmore, who remembers New Zealand declaring war - in World War 1 - said she knew she would remain single from the age of 12, and abstained as a young woman in order to concentrate on earning a living.

The retired secretary said that during her youth in New Zealand sex entailed marriage - and she just did not buy into it.

"I had to learn to stand up for myself and earn my own living," she said. "Some men don't like that in a woman and before long I was too old to marry anyway."

She was proud that she had remained celibate: "People have asked whether I am a homosexual and the answer is no, I have just never been interested in or fancied having sex.

"I imagine there is a lot of hassle involved and I have always been busy doing other things."

Miss Meadmore was born in Glasgow in 1903, just two years after the death of Queen Victoria, said she had to work to support herself as a secretary and a housekeeper but despite several offers of marriage she turned them all down.

She will celebrate her 105th birthday tomorrow at a party with friends at a nursing home.

That is some dedication to a decision made at 12! I wonder how much more rich her life could of been if she had got married. But then again, maybe it wouldn't have.

At least she will never know what she missed. Unfortunately in her day a woman could not acheive a fulfilling career and have a fulfilling family life. It was either one or the other. Fortunately women today do not have to forego one to have the other. Even her comment about being "too old" to marry. There are no "old maid" stigmas around much anymore. Women are getting married for the first time in their 50's and 60's and having rich, fulfilling lives.

What many people fail to realize is that a healthy marriage enriches your life. It should not stifle it.

She had to have some type of relationships otherwise she would have never had offers of marriage. Some guy is not just going to walk up to a gal and ask her to marry him. They had to be seeing each other. Granted she never had sex but I believe she may have learned some things during the times she was courted.

She said it sounded like too much of a bother. There are some people who are asexual, meaning they dont have any interest in having sex. Sounds like she was one of them. Believe it or not, some of these people have mutually satisfying relationships. I wonder what is the difference between that and just having a roommate you get along well with.

Britney Spears claimed she never did it, so even a 105 coud tell a lie too. I doubt anyone is interested enough to check.
