Let It Snow! But Who Removes It?

In my home it is all of us we have fun digging out and building snow piles for forts later.

If over night I will often dig out the driveway near midnight then up an hour early for some light morning exercise before heading out. Sorry ladies but this is heavy slugging at times.

Now you can buy a snow blower ranging around 1300 that will do the trick but anything less then a well built 8 hp blower with two stages and two blowers go home and get your shovel in my books.

This mean a front auger that has a serrated edge for the heavy chopping then the shoot should have a booster fan to throw that snow up and out. If the snow is light and will not fly 15 feet out that shoot do not buy it. Also look how the throat is connected to the main frame and front shoot housing if it is not solid the machine will not last. Big tires is the second must or you are going to be stuck a lot.

Now you can pay someone to do this likely 20 to 30 for a small driveway. Long drives (50ft plus) it will be more and likely a monthly fee.

There are many many snow removal contractors most do landscaping gin the summer. Snow removal just help to recoup machine costs since much of it can be used to move dirt or snow.

Snow is actually very heavy if the weather is mild causing a high moisture content in the snow.

I might start a Magsley snow buster thread for tips on snow removal and ice management.

Yes a good heavy duty snow blower is a must. I employ three kids two with shovels and one with a broom. We try to get the snow off as soon as it falls to keep the heavy lifting issue at bay. If it is just a light snow fall a couple of brooms usually does it. You want the snow off the side walks and driveways as soon a possible. If you just drive over it you will cause it to slowly turn to ice and that is no fun. I do have a ice chipper in my inventory too. I am the one that usually is breaking up the ice. You need one of these if you get a ice storm. A shovel and snow blower are of no use in a ice storm. Rock salt is your friend though.

We have a LONG driveway (1/10 mile) and so needless to say we hire it done. We have used the same guy for several years now. He just automatically shows up if there is an accumulation of 2-3 inches or more. I am thinking if it continued like it was coming down when we left this morning (there was already 3+inches and no sign of letting up) then he will have made a visit before we get there.
The front deck and walkway is usually handled by my husband since our kids are now all gone biggrin.gif . But I do take my turn every now and then. It's not so bad. We have a good sized front deck and a raised boardwalk out to the parking area.

The hardest part is when the snow eventually slides off the roof and dumps in front of the door. There are times - when it ices up - where it would be a bit dangerous to have that dump on you while standing there.

I try to make sure the snow is not ready to slide off the roof before walking under the edge. The nice thing is to have a small heat coil along the edge of the house to prevent ice dams. This also helps keep snow from falling on you.

I do not let snow build up as it removed shingles and eves trough which I think never should be install in the first place.

Long handles on a extension rode does wonders. Even just hitting back a bit with the rod to keep snow below 3or 4 inches. I never that that issue now where I am how ever but growing up we did. We had a ladder permanently attached in a few place to let us do this as it was a two story home. Thank goodness it have very steep roof. Unlike the junk built today.

Yes having a 6/12 pitch roof or better is a must in the northern areas. The houses that have a 4/12 pitch or less needs to stay in the southern places. Those are the one in danger of roof collapse due to snow weight.

I like the little heating cable to make sure ice or snow does not build up at the edge of my roof. My gutters are safe for now.

Roof and gutter heaters do a good job just get expensive to run on a larger roof.
