Well if you want to be technical, it is These United States, not The United States. That somehow changed after Lincoln.
Socialism done through our process of democracy? I'll have to think on that....
Well since socialism is defined as a states of government who controls the flow of goods... It would still be a Republic with a socialist economy. Actually, everything I can find refers to Socialism as a form of the economy. That brings up something else interesting. What everyone refers to when they say Socialism, isn't Socialism at all. Rather they fear a Totalitarian state, where one political party is in control and has full power over the people.
Unless I just distinguished the popular term "Socialism" wrong, everyone has been erroneous. But then again, people could just be fearing controlled flow of goods. That too also makes sense.
It is supposed to be a republic. Everyone wants the benefits of democracy, but it is not supposed to be a democracy. They want the production of a democracy and the benefits of socialism.
The constitution clearly states that we are a republic with free markets.
As it stands we are more communist than China with the Idea that we are free.
I think that we will go into a period of slavery but Americans are great fighters and we will come threw in the end.
The USA is a Federal Constitutional Republic. There still are examples of socialism and democracy that run through our government as we still do vote on certain issues as individuals and we do have elements of wealth redistribution that are prevelant in socialism. You could even call it a Representative Constitutional Democracy if you focus more on the democratic aspects of our government...but that does leave out the strong focus of federalism.
Now if the government continues to buy everything in sight...we might soon become a nanny state.

Most Americans OK with Big Government
Although an expansive federal government hasn't had a defender in the White House for nearly a half-century - since Lyndon Johnson and his Great Society program - most Americans in a nationwide USA TODAY/Gallup Poll approve of President Obama and the government's latest assertiveness. However, some of the steps he has ordered have made them wary. Ref. Source 6

"We're not a democracy. It's a terrible misunderstanding and a slander to the idea of democracy to call us that. In reality, we're a plutocracy: a government by the wealthy."
