MARKETS: Asian stocks slide, London shares open up

Japan's Nikkei index closed down 2.46 percent, but London shares rose slightly on initial trading on Thursday. Plunges in South Korean and Australian markets also slumped, darkening the outlook for emerging markets amid global recession fears.
