I do not see what is wrong with this. If they are clean of any disease then why not allow them to give blood or use them in a transfusion. I am sure the person who is receiving the blood is not going to suddenly turn gay.

I don't know how it is in the states, but in the UK, even if two men have had oral sex but not actual intercourse they cannot give blood...why this is so, I don't know, but I'm sure they have a reason for this, especially seeing that there are major shortages of blood donations!

I believe that it is all peoples perception. I believe that people feel if a gay man or woman gives blood, even though they are not sick or have any disease, it is still somehow tainted blood and should not be used.

Yes there is a shortage of blood donors and if people would get over this misconception that it is tainted maybe more people would be able to give blood.

I am going to blunt but this is not an opinion just facts.

Almost half of all HIV/AIDS cases diagnosed in 2006 in the 33 states occurred among African Americans,
for a rate of about 68 cases per 100,000; Hispanics also had elevated rates of newly diagnosed
disease (26 cases per 100,000) compared with those observed among whites (8 cases per 100,000). The
number of newly diagnosed cases for African Americans and Hispanics remained stable from 2003
through 2006.
"¢ Rates of AIDS cases diagnosed in 2006 in the 50 states and the District of Columbia were also elevated
among African Americans and Hispanics compared with whites (about 5 cases per 100,000), at approximately
48 cases and 16 cases per 100,000, respectively.
"¢ About three-fourths of HIV/AIDS cases and cases of AIDS diagnosed in 2006 occurred among men.
"¢ Men who have sex with men (MSM) and persons exposed to HIV through high-risk heterosexual contact
(I.e., heterosexual contact with someone known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection)
accounted for 82% of all cases of HIV/AIDS diagnosed in 2006.

I have heard often the 80% factor for the amount of gay male who have stds. Thus the reason but from what I see here it is not just the homosexual that made the number but just amount of men having unprotected sex. Perhaps that is a better question to be asking. I know they ask if you know the sexual history of any you have been with. Being black is an awful risk also so perhaps the system needs some revamping.
