Mormons & Proposition 8 - Page 8

As usual I get these submissions all the time. Too long for a Post, maybe not geared for Public LDS Board (merged 3 July, 2012) so I just put here for reference. I have not read it yet.

Robin Williams vs. Mormons

Robin is angry that Proposition 8 -- which struck down gay marriage a few years ago -- passed in California. Since the Mormon Church was so instrumental in the Prop 8 passage, Robin used them as a target. Ref. Source 3 LDS Commentary on what Williams said: Source 1

64% don't support gay marriage new poll says

SANTA ANA, Calif. - When it comes to polls about same-sex marriage, it's all about how you ask the question. A new national poll by Lawrence Research found that 64 percent of Americans feel that marriage should only be between one man and one woman. Thirty-three percent feel marriage should be redefined to include any two people. Ref. Source 2

Just when you thought this has all gone quiet here it is again and you know what... I tend to agree, you can't tell people how to live in their private lives. That's what radical Islam is and we'll have none of that so why should we do it here?

international QUOTE (CNN)
California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage violates U.S. Constitution, appeals court in San Francisco rules.

LDS Church files SCOTUS brief supporting Prop 8, DOMA

"Our theological perspectives, though often differing, converge to support the proposition that the traditional, opposite-sex definition of marriage in the civil law is not only constitutional but essential to the welfare of families, children, and society," Von Keetch of the Utah-based firm Kirton McConkie, wrote in the DOMA brief. I cannot deny it, I'm glad. I can perfectly separate my personal or even religious views about this topic and its legality entirely. We, Mormons, are not the "Morality" Police or some sort of Taliban, going around bashing people and trying to stop them from receiving legal benefits just because their lifestyle isn't supported by our religious convictions.

Church Responds to Supreme Court Marriage Rulings

Salt Lake City - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released the following statement today regarding the decisions announced by the United States Supreme Court on cases involving marriage:
"By ruling that supporters of Proposition 8 lacked standing to bring this case to court, the Supreme Court has highlighted troubling questions about how our democratic and judicial system operates. Many Californians will wonder if there is something fundamentally wrong when their government will not defend or protect a popular vote that reflects the views of a majority of their citizens.

"In addition, the effect of the ruling is to raise further complex jurisdictional issues that will need to be resolved.

"Regardless of the court decision, the Church remains irrevocably committed to strengthening traditional marriage between a man and a woman, which for thousands of years has proven to be the best environment for nurturing children. Notably, the court decision does not change the definition of marriage in nearly three-fourths of the states." Ref. Source 6
