Obama bows -- and there is no mistaking it -- to the Saudi king.

"Such an act is a traditional obeisance befitting a king's subjects, not his peer. There is no precedent for U.S. Presidents bowing to Saudi or any other royals," said the conservative Washington Times. An Obama aide speaking anonymously denied that the president was bowing. "It wasn't a bow. He grasped his hand with two hands, and he's taller than King Abdullah," the aide was quoted as saying by Politco.com Wednesday. That explanation was "absurd," the conservative Weekly Standard said. And the caption attached to the Getty Images photo said the president was bowing. |

Just to throw a curve ball I would like to ask your thoughts Farseer on this. Is it wrong to bow as a sign of respect as opposed to acknowledging superiority?
From the video and the position of the man in front of Obama one can not guarantee his head position at the lowest point of his bend. From should and back position I would not be shocked if he kissed the hand.
To me if he took the hand maintained eye contact with the king and bowed forward that is a greeting acceptable to an equal. In this case I think his eyes were floor bound thus subservient in nature and incorrect. They are equals of no doubt.
I do not know the customs there enough to fully understand if keeping eye contact would be an insult to the king or not. Sometimes conceding slightly on your own personal customs to the customs of the opposing leader when in their country is just a sign of respect. Sort of the idea you are on their turf and show respect for their customs.
Just a thought.

I just saw the video and I personally do not see what is disturbing about it. There is a king and maybe protocol dictates he has to do that. To be honest, I think the issue is being carried away because is the King of Saudi Arabia. If this was the Queen of England or any other King or Queen in the world, we won't be speaking about this.
Rather off topic, but... One of my pet peeves is royalty. Personally, I don't like anything related to protocol but I must say that I don't think Obama did anything wrong really. |

Though I am ultimately ruled by royalty I am with you LDS_Forever I am not a huge supporter in royalty like this. I also agree it is the concept that it is the Saudi king instead of Europe. Also I think the USA does have issues with the Royalty concept and with reason.

Did he actually kiss his hand? He did not bow to the Queen so they are wondering what happened with the king. A lot of US Citizens are saying he is trying too hard to be friends with everyone. He also seems to be creating something closer to an international financial control system.

The big deal is that President Obama is the head of state of the US. At the very least, he is the equal of the King of Saudi Arabia. In reality, as the President of the superpower whose friendship Saudi Arabia trades upon, he is the superior. Yet he barely nods his head to Britain's head of state, who is surely his equal.
The way he bowed to the King shows that he has the greatest respect, if not submission to, that King.
The President of the United States does NOT bow to any monarch, despot, or any other ruler. Never has. To do so indicates that we, the US, submit to that monarch.
Since he entered the Oval Office, he has consistently pandered to the Muslims, especially the terrorists. His first official phone call was to the leader of Hamas. After that, he called several other Muslim leaders. Finally, he got around to talking to the Israeli Prime Minister. He went to Europe, and urged Europe to accept Turkey, despite Turkey's continued attempts at genocide, and the fact that it is moving more and more towards Islamofascist extremism.
All through the election cycle, Mr. Obama and his supporters tried to convince everyone that he was not Muslim, and that he would not give Muslim countries any special considerations. Yet he bows to the King.
Oh, yes, when will he get around to publicly consoling the captain's family? Terrorist pirates take over a US flag ship, and the President can't even acknowledge it. Of course, the terrorists are most likely Muslim, so maybe that is it.

If not he certainly was close enough to have done so. Again the queen of England has different customs then Saudi Arabia. So I am not going to take much concern from that.

I feel that he bowed to a king as not equals but as one of his subjects. I think our president is doing all he can to make America look bad. I feel that he should never have been elected. I did not vote for him and now I am hoping that he gets impeached.
