The federal government is extending the deadline to apply for Obamacare coverage until Christmas Eve.
Americans can now sign up as late as Tuesday and still get coverage that kicks in on January 1, CNN producer Adam Aigner-Treworgy reports.
"This is similar concept as Election Day: if you are in line when the polls close, you still get to vote," An administration official told CNN. Ref. CNN
President Barack Obama today unveiled what his administration called the biggest reforms to U.S. Surveillance programs since he took office.
Obama said he was ordering changes that will end the bulk collection of metadata "As it currently exists, and establish a mechanism that preserves the capabilities we need without the government holding this bulk metadata."
Obama said that intelligence analysts now will need approval from secret courts to go into phone records routinely stored by the National Security Agency.
The President also called on Congress to authorize a new panel of outside advocates to participate in "Significant cases" Before the secret court that handles intelligence collection issues
"Unless there is a compelling national security purpose," Obama said, the U.S. Won't monitor the communications of foreign leaders. Ref. CNN

President Barack Obama will call for "A year of action" In his State of the Union address tonight, according to excerpts released in advance by the White House.
"That's what most Americans want -- for all of us in this chamber to focus on their lives, their hopes, their aspirations," He will say.
The President will offer what he calls "Concrete, practical proposals" For economic growth and enhanced opportunity, according to the transcripts. While some of his ideas will require congressional action, he has vowed to accomplish parts of his agenda without Congress.
"Wherever and whenever I can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for more American families, that's what I'm going to do," Obama will say.
Obama failed to get any of his top 2013 State of the Union priorities -- a jobs program, gun control and sweeping immigration reform -- through Congress. He goes into tonight's speech with only a 43% job-approval rating. The President hopes to use this State of the Union speech to rebuild his standing enough to force action on some of his priorities. Just days after his State of the Union address in which he called for Congress to find common ground with him, President Barack Obama sounded less than confident that they could find that common ground.
"I think there are some issues where it's going to be hard for them to move forward," Obama said of congressional Republicans, "And I am going to reach out to them and say, 'Here are my best ideas, I want to hear yours,' " Obama told CNN Chief Washington Correspondent Jake Tapper in an interview airing today.
"In no way are my expectations diminished or my ambitions diminished. But what is obviously true is we've got a divided government right now," Obama told Tapper.
