Obama to release 22 drug offenders in clemency push
In what the White House called a move toward greater fairness in sentencing, President Obama commuted the sentences of 22 drug offenders Tuesday, more than doubling the number of commutations he has issued while president. President Barack Obama's approval rating is shifting back toward positive territory, as the public's take on the economy hits a new high mark for Obama's tenure, according to a new CNN/ORC poll.
For the first time since May 2013, more Americans polled say they have a positive impression of how Obama is handling the presidency than a negative one: 48% approve of the way Obama is handling his job, while 47% disapprove. Obama's numbers are on the rise at the same time the public gives the economy the highest ratings of his presidency.
The poll finds 52% describe the U.S. Economy as very or somewhat good, while 48% call it very or somewhat poor. That marks the first time since Obama took office that significantly more people describe the economy as "Good" Than "Poor," And only the second time since then that a majority has described the nation's economy as "Good." President Obama apologized Thursday for the accidental deaths of two hostages during a U.S. Counterterrorism strike targeting an al Qaeda compound in January.
Multiple U.S. Officials told CNN the hostages were killed by a U.S. Military drone that targeted the compound. American Warren Weinstein, an American USAID contractor held by al Qaeda since 2011, was killed in the strike, as was Italian Giovanni Lo Porto, held since 2012.
"As president and as commander-in-chief, I take full responsibility for all our counterterrorism operations, including the one that inadvertently took the lives of Warren and Giovanni," Obama said. Ref. CNN
President Barack Obama called for a nationwide "Soul-searching" And condemned the outbreak of violence in Baltimore that followed the funeral for Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old man who died after being arrested more than two weeks ago.
Those responsible for the violence "Need to be treated as criminals," He said, adding that they "Distracted from the fact that you had seen multiple days of peaceful protests that were focused on entirely legitimate concerns."

President Barack Obama's job approval numbers are sinking as American attitudes about the nation's progress have taken a turn for the worse, according to a new CNN/ORC poll.
A majority of the public once again say things in the U.S. Are going pretty badly and disapproval of Obama's job performance has climbed back above 50% as well.
Overall, 47% say things in the country are going well, 52% that they're going badly. That's a reversal from March, when 53% said things were going well, the highest share to say so during Obama's presidency. The shift comes across partisan and demographic lines, with no one group's opinions driving the overall change.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points. Ref. CNN
