Obama has ordered flags at half-staff more than any president in history
With his tenure in office marked by terror attacks and mass shootings, President Obama has reached a sad but remarkable milestone in his presidency: He has ordered the lowering of the nation's flags to half-staff more often than any president in history. On Sunday, Obama extended that unenviable streak even further, ordering all flags at federal buildings and ships at sea to be flown at half-staff to honor the 49 victims of the Orlando shooting. Since 2009, he has issued 66 proclamations to fly the flag at half-staff, exceeding President George W. Bush's 58 and Bill Clinton's 50, according to a USA TODAY analysis. Ref. USAToday.
Frankly acknowledging a "Tough week" in the United States after tense days of shootings and racial tensions, President Barack Obama said Saturday that he did not believe the United States was "As divided as some have suggested."
"As painful as this week has been, I firmly believe that America is not as divided as some have suggested," Obama said during a NATO news conference in Poland.
"Americans of all races and all backgrounds are rightly outraged by the inexcusable attacks on police, whether it's in Dallas or anywhere else. That includes protesters, that includes family members who have grave concerns about police misconduct, and they've said this is unacceptable. There's no division there."
Obama was speaking at the conclusion of a NATO summit, a meeting whose central themes were largely obscured both by the Dallas shootings and reaction to last month's Brexit vote. The White House announced Friday the President will cut his European trip short to visit Dallas early next week. Ref. USAToday.

President Barack Obama said that Donald Trump offered a deeply pessimistic outlook at the Republican National Convention that doesn't match reality.
Noting he didn't watch Trump's acceptance speech on Thursday -- "I've got a lot of stuff to do," he noted -- Obama said he read news coverage of the remarks.
"This idea that America is somehow on the verge of collapse, this vision of violence and chaos everywhere, doesn't really jibe with the experience of most people," Obama said during a press conference in the White House East Room alongside Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.
"America is much less violent than it was 20 or 30 years ago," Obama said, citing statistics that he said showed crime rates have fallen under his presidency. Ref. CNN.
