President Barack Obama's approval rating got its own convention bump and stands at its highest level since just before his second inauguration in 2013.
Obama's approval rating dipped to 50% after the Republican convention, but has risen to 54% in the wake of his party's convention, with 45% disapproval according to a new CNN/ORC Poll. That's the most positive approval rating of his second term. Ref. CNN.

Obama vetoes terrorism lawsuit bill, setting up override battle
President Obama made good on a threat to veto a bill allowing lawsuits against foreign countries who support terrorism, setting up what could be the most contentious veto override vote of his presidency. Obama commutes 102 more sentences, hitting a total that exceeds the previous 11 presidents combined
President Obama commuted the sentences of another 102 federal prison inmates Thursday, continuing his record-breaking move to reduce the terms of people mostly imprisoned for nonviolent drug offenses. This round follows two waves of commutations in August, when he reduced the terms of 325 inmates. So far he has commuted the sentences of 774 inmates. Ref. USAToday.
Obama granted clemency to a Texas drug dealer. The inmate refused it.
President Obama commuted Arnold Ray Jones' sentence on Aug. 3, but he made it conditional on Jones going to drug treatment. Jones, a drug dealer who unsuccessfully completed previous drug treatment programs, refused. That means he'll stay in prison for another three to six years, instead of two. President Obama called Donald Trump's backing of Russian President Vladimir Putin "Unprecedented," adding that he was more concerned about Republican politicians who have called him soft on Russia now backing Trump's line. Obama criticizes FBI 'leaks' and 'innuendo' in Clinton investigation
President Obama criticized what he called FBI "Leaks" in his first direct remarks on Director James Comey's decision to notify Congress of the status of an investigation into newly discovered emails related to Hillary Clinton's private server. "I do think that there is a norm that when there are investigations, we don't operate on innuendo, we don't operate on incomplete information, we don't operate on leaks," Obama said. Ref. USAToday.
