As a spinoff to my earlier column "Five athletes most out of touch with reality", I have come up with the my Top 5 list of Most Embarassing Fighters that Must Retire ASAP.
Fighters are the most stubborn athletes out there, and before they continue to break body parts, lose brain cells and the following five fighters should just call it quites :
5. Kimbo Slice : If Kimbo somehow manages to catch on with another major MMA promotion after the demise of EliteXC, he will get seriously hurt. Kimbo just doesn't have the feel for fight competition, and chances are, he will be on the receiving end of many more knockouts like the one he got from Seth Petruzelli.
4. Chuck Liddell : Sad to see one of the greats decline, but Liddell is almost 39, and has been taking more brutal knockouts lately, most notably by Rashad Evans at UFC 88.
3. Roy Jones, Jr. : Jones should've retired after the second loss to Antonio Tarver. He thought talking a good game, beating up on another senior citizen would make him the Roy Jones of old (back in the day, I mean). Being massacred by Joe Calzaghe proved otherwise.
2. Evander Holyfield : I know he's got bills to pay, but the guy just is not a viable fighter anymore. Being 46 and being roughed up by Sultan Ibragimov means that it's time to call it a career.
1. Ken Shamrock : If you think Evander Holyfield is embarassing, the 44-year old Ken Shamrock has him beat by a mile. The World's Most Dangerous Man is dangerous only to himself now. Five straight first-round knockout losses in a row. Seven losses in his last eight fights. Getting your ass kicked by no-names. Getting a fight-cancelling cut the day of your big fight. How much more embarassing can you get?
Honorable mention : Royce Gracie, Kazushi Sakuraba, Matt Hughes
