Alternative Reason For Hives

As has been Discussed the idea of using humans for the energy they produce does not make sense. What would be a better reason that you can come up with for creating hives of humans?

NOTE: Although we are told the robots uses humans for energy could that reason be not true? Could it be that the machine world has a deeper meaning, just doing it for testing and lab purposes?

A better reason would be using the bodies to like manufacture biobots like cyborgs. The machines remained machines but I thought they would have tried to mesh the two by now.
