Woolworths - Page 2

They used to be in my country but were eventually bought out by a local businessman. They are similar to K-mart or Wallmart but on a smaller scale, at least they were here.

Woolworths

In the U.S., I think the Woolworth's stores were the last of the old "Five and Dime" shops, so-called because you could get a lot of items for 5 cents or 10 cents. I vaguely remember going there when I was a child, but they closed down in California back in the 60s or 70s. I also remember that a lot of people mispronounced the name as "Woolsworth" for some odd reason. (There's a funny example of that in the movie, "O Brother Where Art Thou?" when George Clooney's character gets thrown out of one, and the bouncer says, "And stay out of the Woolsworth!") I had no idea the chain had still been operating in the UK.

Wasn't it in a Woolworth's diner that the actress Lana Turner was discovered? Or is that just urban legend?
