Okinawa's Second Battle
It seems that this island (Okinawa, Japan) has so many junk food places due to the high GI presence that once occupied there after world war two, that the younger generation is suffering with all kinds of diseases due to the over consumption of KFC, McDonalds, etc. One doctor called it "Okiwana's Second Battle" because a lot of the younger Okinawans are dying off quickly.
I saw the CNN report on this, but it really is all across Japan's major cities. Only the most rural areas are still eating the traditional diet of fish, tofu and rice. Trans fats, sweets, high sugar and fat sauces, fast food, instant noodles, etc... have replaced the traditional diet and the result is larger Japanese and a rapid increase in diabetes and heart disease among the population. This has been going on for years. It was mentioned to me when I went to live there 7 years ago. I can also say that in general, the amount of fat Japanese has increase dramatically over the last 15 years.
Fast food is a problem, but there are many other things that are catching up to people now. In asia, they like a LOT of fat in the meat they eat. I think this comes from long ago when they didnt get much meat and the little fat that they got was actually not bad for them. However, today, people eat meat all the time and the type of meat hasnt changed. It is just layered with fat! Dont get me wrong, it actually taste good because fat is the flavor and it is marbled heavily. It is very easy to cook as it doesnt dry out. However, you wouldnt be able to find this much fat in any supermarket in the US.
Oh, and the instant noodles that are found everywhere in Asia are a chemical, carbohydrate and fat festival in your mouth, but they do taste good!
