GOP Presidential Candidates Sign New Pro-Life Pledge

Three Republican presidential candidates have signed a new presidential pledge that has them affirming that unborn children join people after birth in deserving protection of their right to life.

Sponsored by Personhood USA, the pledge says, "I proclaim that every human being is created in the image and likeness of God, and is endowed by our Creator with the unalienable right to life."

The new pledge already has the support of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Minnesota Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann, and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum. The other Republican candidates have been asked to sign the pledge as well and may do so.

This is the second pro-life pledge following one sponsored by the Susan B. Anthony List this summer that had signed pledge to nominate judges pro-life advocates would appreciate, select pro-life nominees for key administration posts, support de-funding the Planned Parenthood abortion business, and to support a Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act to protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain from abortion. A new survey of people likely to attend Iowa's Republican caucuses indicates that former House speaker Newt Gingrich's support in the state is plunging while former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum's is surging, with support for Santorum more than tripling since the beginning of December.

According to a new CNN/Time/ORC International poll, 25% of people questioned say if the caucuses were held today, they'd most likely back former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and 22% said they would support Rep. Ron Paul of Texas. Romney's 3-point margin is within the poll's sampling error.

Meanwhile, Gingrich has plunged from 33% to 14% this month while Santorum grew to 16%. The poll's release comes six days before the Iowa caucuses kick off Republican nominating contests.

In New Hampshire, which votes a week later, Romney still enjoys a large lead, far ahead of his nearest rival. Ref. CNN

With all precincts reporting, Mitt Romney has been declared the winner in the Iowa caucuses.

Romney edged Rick Santorum by just 8 votes after being virtually tied throughout the night in what appears to be the tightest presidential GOP contest in U.S. history. The Iowa result itself could be the closest on state record.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul finished third, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich placed fourth, Texas Gov. Rick Perry fifth, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann sixth, and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman seventh. Ref. CNN

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is surging in South Carolina and now has a solid lead over his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination, according to a new CNN/Time/ORC International poll released today.

The poll also shows that former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum's support in South Carolina has soared, while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's numbers have nose-dived.

South Carolina holds the first in the south contest in the race for the nomination with its critical January 21 primary.

According to the poll, 37% of likely GOP primary voters in South Carolina say they are currently backing Romney, nearly double his most recent support from CNN's last South Carolina survey conducted early last month. The new poll was conducted Wednesday and Thursday, after Romney's eight-vote victory over Santorum in Tuesday night's Iowa caucuses.

Santorum had 19% support in the survey, up from 4%, and Gingrich was at 18%, down from 43% in the ea rly December poll. Ref. CNN

A federal judge has refused to add Texas Gov. Rick Perry and three other candidates to Virginia's Republican presidential primary ballot.

U.S. District Judge John Gibney ruled Friday that the candidates should have challenged Virginia's primary qualifying rules earlier. Gibney said they knew the rules months ago. Perry sued last month after failing to submit enough signatures to get on the ballot. Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Jon Huntsman also failed to qualify and later joined Perry's lawsuit. They asked Gibney to declare Virginia's law unconstitutional and add their names to the March 6 ballot. Only former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul qualified for the March 6 primary ballot. Ref. USAToday

I think the judge was perfectly correct and justified in his decision. There are rules in place as far as how to qualify - if you don't meet the qualifications or don't meet them in the specified time limit, you don't get on the ballot. Simple as that.

Amen, judge!

President Barack Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney are statistically tied in a hypothetical general election matchup, according to the latest CNN/ORC International Poll.

In the poll, Obama shows signs of weakness on the economy, while Romney is seen by some as out of touch with ordinary Americans.

Obama is also virtually tied with Rep. Ron Paul but has a solid lead over Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich in hypothetical head-to-head matchups.

Also in the poll, more respondents think Romney is better suited to get the economy back on track than Obama, 53% to 40%.

The poll was conducted on January 11-12 after Romney won the New Hampshire primary. Ref. CNN
