CLOSE The story of the first Christmas is so beloved that singers and storytellers across the centuries have embellished and elaborated and mythologized the story in celebration.

None of that is found in the biblical account. |
The Bible is not a History book, it is a Story book.
The events described there are interpretations and mis-interpretations written, translated and re-written over two thousand years.
There is evidence that some of the people in the stories existed, some of the events did take place. But there is much encryption of truth in myth and fable as seen in many religious texts. It is a very good read and many lessons can be learned from it. As a structure of values for a religion I think it is the best.
I am sure you can find as many people to agree with you that it a story book as I can find that it is not just a story book.
I will agree that a lot of what we hear and read about has a lot of fable and mythical references in them. A lot of the saying that we instill into our children as it is passed down over time one generation to the next is based on how people view them.
I would say there are a lot of books that this one or that other religion considers the "good" book. All of them are very good reads and if they do not cause you to think then maybe your not reading them correctly.
I believe that if you look hard enough in any reference book, you can interpret what ever view point you like. I have studied the Bible, the Quoran, the poems of Taliesyn and even the Egyptian Book of the Dead. All have value to the open minded; selective understanding brings ignorance and prejudice, no-one has any right to say that their view is more valid than anyone else.

This is where religions with "Good Books" can have an advantage from one point of view.
On the other hand, Oral Traditions that exist in stories told by the hearth are free to be as they are imagined.
In this world of Communication should we believe everything we read?
The article was actually written by a Christian group so I don't see the point here.
