Is it a solution to get people from drinking so much?

Raising The Price Of Alcohol - Page 2

When in college and of very limited financial means, we drank some sort of swill called Red, White and Blue Beer. It did have some malt in it somewhere. There was a hop in there somewhere. It had 5.0% alcohol content like all the other beers, but what it did have was a $5 per case price tag. If we were flush in cash, we stepped up to something like Bud or Bush beer that got you about 25% as much beer. The thing is...heavy drinkers will just lower there quality standards and continue to drink.

Today there are several states in the US that have raised the tax on cigarettes so that a pack of them cost over $5. People continue to smoke... As many have said here, if you were thinking about picking up the habit, the price for it might deter you. However, if you are a devoted smoker, you will continue. You just might not buy Joe Camel.

I also think that there is something else behind the tax hike other than the governmental nurturing of the populous. They want more money. Part of the reason you see all those tax hikes on cigarettes is that there are less people smoking. Less smoking equals less tax income to the state...and the state likes money!

You can jack up the price, but making the penalties stiffer for being caught and actively seeking those drunk (on the roads) will pay off. I also agree with cutting back the marketing allowed.

Vincenzo- that statement is so true. The fact remains that a devoted drinker will find a way to drink. Believe it or not, my grandfather bought Bay Rum and rubbing alcohol to drink when he could not afford his regular drink, and that was before they raised alcohol prices. In my opinion, it just makes the market more open to illegal distillers.

Food for thought; alcohol pretty much advertises itself. How many of us occasional drinkers think 'I need a drink' after a hard day's work?

Raising The Price Of Alcohol Health & Special Psychology

I don't think raising the price will help very much. People always find a way to make alcohol affordable to the poor, mostly by reducing its quality. I hope this is not a new trend the rich will use to bum more money off the poor. It seems they are running out of ways to steal our hard earned money, but hey they have to get rich somehow.

Comments: Like someone said, you can create your own so who cares if they raise the prices. The only thing this is going to do is put more money in the government's pocket and higher prices at the bar. Maybe you won't want nothing more than a beer when you go there if money is tight.

Agreed for some people that have the disease of alcholism then it is very hard to stop and you will not until you have decided that option is best for you.

Dollars to addicts mean nothing but the important thing is that a higher price may deter some of those that are heading in that direction.
