Canada would lose nearly 600,000 jobs within five years if the Big Three automakers completely shut down, according to a report prepared by the Ontario government.

Yes it would be felt especially in the individual towns where they are the main source of employment. Over all I ponder though if we would be wetter off to let the fold and see if new companies could spring up from the rubble with viable technology and pricing. I personally do not see why it could not be so. The long run would be a more stable market.
