AP - American and Russian crewmen installed a probe Tuesday aimed at tracking down problems with a Russian module attached to the international space station and conducted an array of other maintenance and scientific work during a six-hour spacewalk.

Yes I read more into it I guess that does have the capability for a emergency return to earth. I know they had planned some safety thing into the space station. I am thinking that it is big enough now that even one part getting hit should not effect the whole station.
