Does The Mormon Church Back Israel?

There is always conflict in Israel with the surrounding Muslim countries. When there is fighting like whats going on in the Gaza does the church side with Israel or the Palestinians?

This was along the lines of some thoughts I had last night as well. Except I was pondering more about what this event will do to bring us closer to when the world will turn against Israel all together before Christ comes. I had wanted to look up the scripture references but haven't had a chance. I guess I always thought that the USA would be one of the only allies Israel had when the world came against them but somewhere I thought I remembered hearing the actually the US would turn against them as well. Are you familiar with any of these answers? Thanks!

I do not believe the Church takes a specific stance on anything like this. Usually the Church will always make a general statement about the victims of the war and that they hope for peace quickly. Any opinions you get will always be personal opinions from Members on the Topic.

I think the Church backs prophecy. We are told the eventual out come of Israel. I suspect that Israel is going to be make the surrounding nations really mad and there will be something close to a nuclear fallout. Then they will be almost totally overridden by their enemies.

In principle, the Church has officially supported the return of the Jew to its homeland.

We have the 1845 Proclamation of the Twelve which states

That is a pretty strong statement of support for at least the organization of the country of Israel.

And where there is support for a creation of the state of Israel, there would be support for a defence of that nation.

So at least the Church is not against a nation defending itself, and the Church has definitely believed that the Jews have legitimate rights to the nation of Israel.

2 Nephi 29:5

It is a requirement for Latter day Saints to support the Jews, or God will return all things done to the Jews on our heads. But does this mean that we as a church should have support for the State of Israel? I think it does, but I believe this is just my opinion.

Are we not seeing this prophesy being fulfilled. I believe that the evidence is there that God supports the side of Israel, and will in the Future. I believe that it is imperative that we support Israel for our own protection and wellbeing or we may be one of those nations that are "utterly wasted"

But in saying all of this, it does not mean that Latter day saints cannot or should not have compassion and sympathies for Palestinians. They are also children of God.

Yes I feel that the Lord will restore Israel. But why to we assume that modern Israel is that gathering or return? There seems to me that their are probably as many Jews not in the nation of Israel then in the current political nation Israel. Why then are not the majority not gathered. It seems the me that the prophecy is saying at least the majority of Jews will be gathered to Israel. I am not sure if we have that. There have always been Jews in the region, even during the height of the Islamic empire there were plenty of Jews in Palestine. Why do we signify this gathering to the gain of political power to the region by a minority of the world's Jewish population?
In fact in the Jewish culture, it is a hotly contested topic if the nation Israel is indeed the fulfilling of this prophecy. I know several Jews that do not believe that it is. I know a rabbi who once explained to me that this is a very controversial idea in Judaism. he gave a fireside in our ward and explained this idea when an LDS member brought up the idea of the gathering of Israel. He personally did not think the political nation of Israel was the fulfillment of this prophecy.
I am not saying that it is or isn't, but I wonder why we Christians just assume that it is, when we know very little about the Jewish ideas and dynamics and world perspective.

The reason I ask this question is because there is a conflict of interest in most wars. For instance if there is an Israeli Mormon and a Palestine Mormon and they both ask for blessings about going to war with each other how will that work out?

We know that the the Jews must return as a political body (meaning they have to have their own nation) to the area that is now Modern Day Israel and the temple must be in Jerusalem. This is prophesied by all modern Prophets as well as many ancient ones.

There is no reason to believe that the nation that is now called Israel is not that prophesied nation that will be surrounded by her enemies in the Last Day. It may have to go through some changes before the Temple is built, but Israel as a nation had to be created before the prophesied events surrounding her were to be fulfilled.

It is my view that God will use the people that are there to fulfill the prophesy of the Temple being built in Jerusalem, under direction of the first presidency. In order for that to happen, she must be protected from the nations around her that have vowed to kill her Jewish population. If Israel has to take a hard-nosed approach, I do not see a conflict with this. God, in the Old Testament was much more vicious then the Israelites are now being. The Jews today are trying to limit Civilian Casualties (as they have much more capacity to route out Hamas,but have chosen not to use that much force), but the God of the Old Testament required the Death of every man,woman ,and child of those that attacked them. I am not saying that that should happen, but it did happen historically.

The Israelites are actually being quite restrained, in my opinion, and are fulfilling in part, Prophesy.
