Consider the following quote and give your input:

"Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles."
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I am not sure that I can agree to this. While I like my principles and what I stand for they are not set in stone and I can find peace without my principles being totally met.

It is true I think as long as you know what your doing is right by your principals, your heart will rest easy. It is not to say you will not be in conflict with others because of it just that your able to accept the conflict for what it is and be at peace with that.

Agreed. Many do not understand the difference between principles, duty, actions, and commands. Principles is what decides what you will do when duty calls, actions take place or commands are given. For instance, love is a principle, so if you are full of the principle of love you will do your duty as a father.

I think the quote needs to be modified! Should be: "Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of RIGHTEOUS principles."

NOT ALL PRINCIPLES BRING FORTH HARMONY TO PEACE!

JB: Your illustration will fall short in understanding. To do your duty as a father is not the requisite dictate by the principle of love, rather by principle of responsibility. To apply the principle of love, you will not just be duty-bound to be a responsible father but bound to sacrifice, and even to be willing to die, for the person you truly love, that is if you are "full of the principle of love." Anything less will devalue such "fullness of the principle of love." cool.gif

QUOTE (Mcborne)
Your illustration will fall short in understanding.

Short in the understanding of who? Your example for me is one of perspective and not principle. Love is a principle. One can be a father by responsibility and not love their child therefore my example stands. Principle governs action. Therefore based on what your intentions are in the action is governed by the Principle behind it.

Actually, if you really want to dive into this your trying to change the quote to add your own "righteous" is to actually bring further opinion since 'righteousness' for some and others is two different things as illustrated in the evil / good Thread.

Rather off topic, but...
Please do not Post messages in all caps, it is considered 'shouting' and also against our Posting policy here.

I would fist ask mr. Emerson his definition of principles. If he means them as individual ideals, then logically he can't be wrong, because the primary goal of peace is a fulfillment of ideals.
