A 17-year-old female student at Charles County's McDonough High School was seriously wounded today when a 16-year-old male student stabbed her in the back with a steak knife, police said.

these types of incidents are uncommon? I think that means that they are increasing as he did not say rare or isolated. I am glad that my kids go to a school where attacks upon other students are more rare.

I think this is a great indicator that our youth are out of control and are badly in need of help. One should not expect to be stabbed at school under any circumstances. I know the reality is different so we have to try and teach our children to avoid such heated discussions or acts by whatching how they act in school and talk to their friends.

Yes I can agree that our children are out of control. I would say it is wise to think about what you say to others so that they do not get upset with you and try to harm you. In the same sense however it is up to us to try to keep our children safe. In this I try to teach my kids that if you are attacked for some unknown reason do what you have to to get away from your attacker. If that means knocking them out then do it.

My boys are told the same, though it does get me in trouble. In grade two my oldest was in the bathroom and three grade threes decided to splash him with water and start to try and give him a wedgy.

The attacker hit the floor fast with a quick leg sweep and the second was pushed away, the third cried to the teacher that he got hit. My son proudly states I only blocked his arm from grabbing my pants. I had a long conversion with the principle on that one. Many occasions he has just moved to a more visible spot by a teacher to avoid the conflicts. It is his black and white world of justice that he struggles with, we are trying to get him to understand that is great for him but many live in the world of grey with poor moral standards and we have to learn to get along with them as in high school these guys might tote guns or knives and live in the black world.
